The Majority leader Mahama Ayariga, on Tuesday, February 4, pleaded with the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to reinstate four Members of Parliament (MPs) who were suspended from the House.
According to Mr Ayariga, it is natural for people to make mistakes, and it is important to offer forgiveness when they express remorse.
His remarks follow the Speaker’s decision to suspend four MPs after a chaotic incident during the Appointments Committee's vetting of ministerial nominees on Thursday, January 30.
The disturbance destroyed microphones and tables, with some MPs nearly exchanging blows.
Speaking on the matter on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, February 4, the Majority Leader aligned with his minority counterpart, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, in calling for their suspended colleagues to be reinstated.
"Mr Speaker, I support the appeal of my colleague, the Minority leader, that you temper justice with mercy," he stated.
Mr Ayariga acknowledged that Speaker Bagbin’s decision to suspend the MPs was timely and had been widely perceived by Ghanaians as a necessary step to restore the image of Parliament.
He, however, noted that the suspended MPs had accepted their mistakes and shown remorse.
"As you can see, our colleagues are remorseful. They accept your decision in good faith and are appealing to you to reconsider and lift the suspension," he pleaded.
He further pointed out that the suspension affected not only Minority MPs but also members from the Majority side, including the Majority Chief Whip.
"In fact, the chief whip of the majority side was also suspended. So clearly, the conduct was on both sides, and I also on behalf of my side, appeal to you to reconsider your decision and lift the suspensions so that our colleagues can join us whilst the other measures that we are putting in place so that long term, we can ensure the orderly conduct of business in this house is achieved," he added.
