Alhaji Amadu Lamusah, Northern Regional Chairman of Ghana Private Road Transport Union has appealed to the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly to establish more lorry parks within the metropolis to enhance their operations.
He said congestion in the parks made parking and driving out inconvenient for drivers and passengers making enforcement of discipline a problem.
Alhaji Lamusah made the appeal when addressing the Northern Regional Council Meeting of the union and election of new executives in Tamale.
Alhaji Lamusah was retained as Chairman, Chief Zakaria Wemeh as Vice Chairman, Mr Tanko Bawa as First Trustee and Alhaji Abubakari Issahaku, as Second Trustee.
He said the union had intensified education of its drivers on road safety measures and appealed to stakeholders in the transport industry to consider re-training drivers most of whom were illiterates and learnt driving as mates.
Alhaji Lamusah appealed to Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority to translate the Ghana Highway Code into local languages to enable drivers read and understand road signs and regulations.
Mr Yaw Manu, National Chairman of GPRTU announced that the union had negotiated for buses and cars for its members on hire purchase.
He said members would be required to pay a deposit of between GH¢ 1,700 to GH¢2,500 (17 to 25 million cedis) for the vehicles after which the rest would be spread over a five year period.
Mr Steven Okudzeto, General Secretary of the union expressed concern about legal disputes that were disturbing the smooth administration of the union.
He appealed to the members to study the union's constitution to avoid rushing to the courts to settle disputes.
Mr Daniel Avorgah, Deputy Northern Regional Police Commander expressed concern about the spate of accidents on the roads. He was of the view that most of them were due to human error.
He appealed to executives of the union to assist the police maintain sanity on the roads.
