Three women Members of Parliament (MP’s) in the Ashanti retained their seats in the last Sunday’s Presidential and Parliamentary elections conducted nationwide by the Electoral Commission (EC).
They were Madam Cecilia Abena Dapaah, MP for Bantama, Madam Gifty Ohene-Konadu, MP for Asante Akim South and Madam Elizabeth Agyemang, MP for Oforikrom.
They are all of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
Madam Dapaah polled 36,708 votes as against Nana Osei Akoto-Kuffuor of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who had 7,007, with Mr Richard Osei-Tutu of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) polling 2, 677 votes.
An Independent candidate, Mr Stephen Kwaku Saahene polled 1,641 votes with Miss Eunice Owusu-Ansah of the Reformed Patriotic Democrat (RPD) polling 443 votes.
Madam Ohene Konadu had 23,838 as against Mr De-Graft Forkuo of the NDC, who polled 13,843, while the CPP candidate Mr Ebenezer Quao also had 1.063.
Madam Elizabeth Agyemang of Oforikrom won the seat with 40,704 votes followed by Mr Ebenezer Terlabi Okletey of the NDC with 21,572 votes, while Mr Hayford Afful of the CPP polled 1,142 votes and Mr Munir Abdullah Dawood of the People’s National Convention (PNC) registered 1,120 votes.
In another development, Madam Grace Addo was elected as the new MP for Amansie West. She polled 35,274 votes to win the seat for NPP.
Two NPP parliamentary candidates who lost their seats in the Party’s Primaries and decided to go independent also won their seat.
They are Mr Joseph Osei-Owusu, Bekwai Constituency and Nana Yaw Ofori-Kuragu of the Bosome-Freho constituency.
Mr Osei-Owusu polled 34,700 votes to beat the NPP candidate, Mr Ignatius Kofi Poku Adusei who had 8,560.
Nana Ofori-Kuragu also beat his opponent, Kwadwo Kyei Frimpong of NPP with 1,076 votes to maintain the seat.
