Three Nigerians who allegedly forged the Ghana High Court seal and the letterhead of Oak House Law Firm to defraud unsuspecting people of various sums of money have been arrested.
The accused persons, Kingsley Ikechukwu, felix Eyakovie and Wilson Okemu, were subsequently hauled before an Accra circuit court to answer charges of attempting to commit crime, forgery of document and personification.
The accused persons allegedly created a new website with all details including addresses of the law firm to portray that they were lawyers whose client died leaving an amount of $6.4 million and therefore wanted to raise funds so they could retrieve the said money.
Some victims are reported to have paid some monies into an account given them, but the exact amount is yet to be established.
The accused persons were also reported to have been using the Ghana High Court seal and other important documents of the Judiciary which have names of all the Supreme Court judges including the Chief Justice, to convince people that they were genuine lawyers.
They however pleaded not guilty before Justice Ivy Heward-Mills and were granted GH¢50,OOO bail each with a surety to be justified and to re-appear on May 28, 2009. The sureties were ordered to submit their passport-size pictures to the registrar.
The prosecutor, ASP George Abavelim, told the court that the complainant, Bernard Owusu- Twumasi, is a legal practitioner with Oak House Law Firm while the accused persons were unemployed Nigerians who live at Labadi, a suburb of Accra.
The prosecutor narrated that the accused persons have been using the complainant's law firm and other law firms to defraud unsuspecting people and that on April 26, 2009, the complainant chanced upon a hard copy of an e-mail message purported to have originated from his firm which had been sent by the accused to their victims with a view to collecting various sums of money from them.
He said Kingsley Ikechukwu assumed the name Nana Elvis Gada and presented himself as a lawyer with the complainant's law firm.
Complainant subsequently alerted police and discreet investigation led to their arrest. Further investigations disclosed that the accused persons have been using the Ghana High Court seal and other important documents of the Judiciary to defraud people.
