Three people have been confirmed dead in the latest surge of violence in the Bawku Municipality, Sunday morning.
Upper East Regional Minister, and Chairman of the Regional Security Council Mark Wayongo told Joy News the violence was triggered by the death of a Mamprusi man.
He was allegedly ambushed by two men in his car and shot to death.
Incensed by the death of their colleague, the Regional Minister said the Mamprusi youth took to the streets and in a reprisal attack lynched another man suspected to be from the Kusasi ethnic group and burnt his motor bike to ashes.
The military in their bid to disperse the angry youth, fired warning shots to scare them away, but a live bullet, according to the minister hit one of them, leading to the third death.
Mark Wayongo, hinted the death toll could be higher, following unconfirmed reports of dead bodies found in parts of the Municipality.
This latest violence underlines years of bloody confrontations between the Mamprusis and the Kusasis which have claimed dozens of innocent lives and razed several properties to ashes.
Describing Sunday morning’s escalation as “worrying” Mark Wayongo said troops from Tamale have been called in for reinforcement, as pockets of shooting could be heard from the Bawku Township.
