Thierry Henry has warned Arsenal they will never fulfil their ambition of winning the Premier League with Olivier Giroud as their leading striker, and says his former club need to buy four players this summer.
Arsenal effectively relinquished any remaining hopes of winning the title this season when being held 0-0 at home to Chelsea on Sunday, with chances at a premium against Jose Mourinho’s ultra-organised defence.
Giroud had an unproductive afternoon but prior to the match against Chelsea had scored seven goals in seven Premier League matches to have a total of 14 for the season.
Henry, who remains Arsenal’s all-time record goalscorer and won two Premier League titles, said his compatriot is not of the required quality and if Arsenal really want to challenge for the title, they need to go on an extensive recruitment drive this summer.
"I think they need to buy four players - they need that spine,” said Henry on Sky Sports.
"They need a goalkeeper, they still need a centre-back, they still need a holding midfielder and, I'm afraid, they need a top, top quality striker to win this league again.
"You had the best example with Chelsea here today. They were struggling last season to win the league. They went on to buy [Thibaut] Cortouis, [Nemanja] Matic, Cesc [Fabregas] and [Diego] Costa.
"For me, that speaks volumes and you saw it today - a team didn't and a team did, and they are about to win the league again.
"He [Arsene Wenger] has to do it. You need to have this competitive thing within the group - to win the league, that has to happen.
"I think Giroud is doing extremely well. But can you win the league with him? I wouldn't think so. He does a job, and he does it ever so well, but you can't win the league."
