The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, says that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is striving to present Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, as humble.

Mr Gyamfi asserts that NPP communicators are attempting to market an inherently arrogant candidate who is difficult to sell because they have to promote Dr Bawumia's campaign.

This statement comes after Dr Opoku Prempeh, during his unveiling ceremony in Kumasi on Tuesday, proclaimed that no president has developed the nation like President Akufo-Addo. He suggested that Ghana's first president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah achieved fewer accomplishments compared to President Akufo-Addo.

“Since independence from 1957 until today, we’ve not had any president that has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. I say from 1957 till today, you can bring your Kwame Nkrumah...no president who has protected Ghana and moved the country forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” he explained.

Social media buzzed following the remarks, with many calling for an apology.

Napo apologised on Friday, July 12 after an initial justification of the comments.

He said his statement on Tuesday was not meant to disrespect Dr Nkrumah or any of the country’s former heads of state.

Speaking on JoyNews Newsfile, Mr Gyamfi said, “They [NPP] can bathe Napo with all the water in the sea, but they would not be able to rid him of arrogance because he is innately disrespectful, condescending, and arrogant. Character, they say, is like pregnancy; you cannot conceal it; it would come out no matter what you do to try to conceal it.”

He stated that the notion of Napo being arrogant is not propagated by NDC members but by the public in general.

Mr Gyamfi added that in the past few days, those who have spoken against Napo's comments include journalists, chiefs, and historians, not just NDC members.

“Is it the NDC who told Napo to insult diploma teachers as daft and unintelligent? Is it the NDC who told Napo to tell Ghanaians who were legitimately demanding a dumsor timetable so that they can at least plan their lives to go and prepare their own timetable because they were nation wreckers like Napo said to Ghanaians”? He quizzed.
