Educationist, Professor Stephen Adei says there’s no reason for government to send final year students back to home despite some of them testing positive for Covid-19.
He explained that despite some cases having been recorded in schools, the students are safer on campus during this time.
“I don’t think that given the general circumstances there is any cause for alarm in what is happening in the schools.
"In fact, I think they are in a safer environment at this moment than being within the general society,” he said on the Super Morning Show, Monday.
However, others hold the view that schools staying open for final year students is risky as it can make room for slip ups and that exams could be taken in alternative ways not to the detriment of the students.
Prof Adei disagrees stating that one unfortunate incident should not bring national education to a halt.
“I think this incident by itself does not negate the whole decision of the children going back to school. I think that it was quite irresponsible; they should have called at least, an ambulance with immediate effect. But don’t make one incident as unfortunate as it is, to negate the whole policy,” he said.
The educationist suggested that instead, stakeholders should come together to find better multiple ways forward because the disease is here to stay.
“Covid-19 is going to be with us for a long time. We must find a way and bring our minds together to find the best way to [keep students in school],” he said.
He further stressed that schools closing down because of one unfortunate incident is “a cheap way of solving a problem.
“We have a bigger national issue to address,” he added.
