Gideon Boako, a spokesperson for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the new Patriotic Party's Parliamentary Candidate for Tano North, has expressed skepticism about the motives behind the recent Democracy Hub protests, suggesting that the demonstrations lack authenticity, coming so close to the upcoming elections.
He made these remarks in light of the protests that have taken place in Accra, aimed at addressing issues such as illegal mining and governance concerns, which led to the arrest and subsequent remand of some 53 protesters.
Speaking in an interview on Peace FM on Friday, September 27, Dr Boako argued that with the elections just two months away, the timing of the protests raises questions about their sincerity.
He posited that such demonstrations are often politically motivated, designed to sway public opinion rather than genuinely advocate for change.
Dr Boako emphasised that the government remains open to dialogue but expressed concern over the potential for protests to disrupt the electoral process.
He further pointed out that genuine activism should prioritise constructive engagement with the government to address pressing national issues, rather than resorting to protests that may lack a clear purpose.
Dr Boako called on citizens to critically assess the intentions behind the demonstrations, urging them to focus on constructive dialogue as the country approaches a pivotal election period.
"Anyone leading a protest and believes that if any human being dies is nothing, it means their demonstration was more political than conservationists. So I believe two or three months to election, there is no genuine demonstration. It is a political protest, not genuine. They used galamsey as a decoy," he stated.
