Following the publication of the first edition entitled The Situation of Ghanaian Students on Government Scholarships in the UK ( on ghanaweb and myjoyonline early on this month), there has been some reactions on the part of some of the institutions concerned to find solutions to the issues raised.
The most profound intervention came from the High Commissioner who immediately held a meeting with some senior members of staff, including the representative of the Minister of Education in the United Kingdom who did well last time when students were encountering problems in the UK. We seize this opportunity to thank her for all her efforts and time put in to calm the situation while a permanent solution is being looked at. We also request that the Scholarship Secretariat in Ghana should work hand in hand with their representatives and take their recommendations seriously regarding the burden of their tasks.
We would also like to use this publication to thank his Excellency the High Commissioner of Ghana to the United Kingdom for taking the issue on board and trying to find an everlasting solution to the problem as soon as he knew of it. By doing so he has proven to us that he is here as the representative of all Ghanaians irrespective of their views and dominations. He has carried this attitude forward by opening his doors to all Ghanaians living in the UK who can contribute in one way or the other to assist him in providing better services and good governance.
Despite all the efforts up to this moment however, there has not been a solution yet to the issue raised by the previous letter. This brings us to the issue raised by some of our fellow Ghanaians who said, “We should stop complaining and look for jobs and carry on with life”. We use this publication to inform them that we left our respective jobs back home to further our knowledge, not to work while we are on scholarship.
Your Excellency the High Commissioner, on behalf of the Ghanaian students in the United Kingdom, we once more thank you and welcome you here. With the effort you have already put in, we are pleased that there is someone out there fighting on our behalf. We hope you carry this effort forward and work with the others who have played similar roles like the Education Minister here to resolve the pending issue once and for all.
We the students call on you to use the authority vested in you by the state and your position to audit the treasury department of the High Commission since it is the point of origin of the problem. With this, we will be able to resolve the problem successfully and to the satisfaction of all the interested parties.
