The Public Relations Officer of the International Youth Fellowship (IYF) Frederick Tetteh has said that government will continue to spend huge sums of money on waste management if the negative attitude of the public towards waste disposal are not changed.
He said that that the public and other stakeholders should be circumspect on their attitudes since Christmas festivities bring additional garbage to the society.
Speaking to newsmen during a clean-up exercise at this year’s West Africa camp of the international youth fellowship (IYF), Mr Tetteh reiterated the need for partnership with prospective cooperate bodies to champion the course of eliminating waste from our communities.
That he believes will go a long way in augmenting the efforts of the government as long as effective waste management remains topical among the challenges confronting the nation.
Frederick Tetteh regretted that despite government’s efforts of reducing the over 160,000 tons of waste produced daily in Accra and Tema, not much has been achieved partly due to indiscriminate disposal of solid waste.
The International Youth Fellowship (IYF) has so far carried out a number of clean up exercises in Accra and Tema over the past two years.
IYF intends to conduct a few more which will serve as a precursor to its most populated annual Youth Summit expected to bring together about 3,000 local and foreign students in July 2010.
The exercise, which was meant to prepare the corridors of Tema (the gateway to West Africa) for the festive season, forms part of the on-going 6-day IYF West Africa Camp tailored towards effective leadership training for High School Graduates, Tertiary students and graduates within the West African Sub-region.
More than 500 members of IYF with support from the Tema Metropolitan Assembly and Zoomlion Ghana Limited took part in cleaning up areas around the Tema community 12 roundabout as well as sections of the community 9 block factory in Tema.
Frederick Tetteh said, IYF will continue in its endeavour to encourage labour and national service amongst the youth.
