Former Board Chairman of Hearts of Oak Commodore Mensah has bemoaned the lack of exceptional talent in Ghana's top flight.
Speaking from the perspective of the Phobians - who over the last decade have been hit by a consistent player exodus - Mensah indicated these players are the stars that draw fans to the stadium at a particular period.
According to the football administrator this is a major reason for the continuous decline in patronage of the local league.
"Gone are the days when there were stars in the league. The likes of Shamo Quaye, Joe Debrah et al. These were players who used to attract players to go to the stadium simply because they knew they were going to watch stars," he lamented.
"With all due respect to the current crop of players in the league, they don’t attract the supporters. So those of us whose duty it is to draw these supporters to the stadium find it very difficult to do so."
He also attributed the low patronage of the local league to the infiltration of foreign football, especially the English Premier League on television and radio in Ghana.
"What comes to mind is the foreign leagues on our television especially the EPL."
On suggesting solutions to the decline in patronage of the Ghana League by fans, the former Hearts of Oak Board Chairman believes all stakeholders need to ensure the top flight's schedules do not clash matches of the major European leagues.
