A senior figure in the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Hackman Owusu-Agyeman, has warned the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the upcoming elections will not be an easy victory for any party.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express, the former New Juaben MP stated that Ghana’s voters are aware of the progress made under the NPP and will not be swayed by rhetoric or baseless accusations.
“This election is not a done deal. Absolutely not,” Mr Owusu-Agyeman to host Evans Mensah on Monday.
“If you know what is happening in the villages, you would understand that people are seeing the impact of the work being done.”
He pointed to numerous government achievements, including infrastructure development and social interventions, as evidence of the NPP’s commitment to national progress.
“I was shocked when I travelled and saw this little thing here—even a landing ride for the fishermen at the beach,” he recounted.
“You look at the hospitals—over 38 of them. Then the major hospitals—over 40. The roads are being made. The schools are there. Free education is there. Things are happening.”
The former Foreign Minister dismissed claims that the election is predetermined, urging the opposition to adopt a more constructive approach.
He referenced a statement by an NDC figure suggesting that the Electoral Commission’s Chairperson could unilaterally declare a president, labelling such rhetoric as unproductive.
“I heard one of them say all that is required now is for the EC Chair to say, ‘You are now the president of the Republic of Ghana.’ This section is not a done deal,” he reiterated.
He acknowledged that concerns exist on both sides of the political divide but cautioned against deliberate exaggeration of accusations.
“Concern there would always be. I don’t know of one jurisdiction where there are no concerns from the other side of the political divide,” he stated.
“But we must ensure these concerns remain reasonable and not go completely extraterrestrial.”
Mr Hackman Owusu-Agyeman concluded by expressing confidence in the NPP’s ability to connect with voters and defend its record.
“The work speaks for itself,” he said.
“People are awake. They know what is happening. And when they look at the totality of what has been done, they will recognise that this election is far from a done deal.”
