An eighteen-year-old girl who stole 22,000 Nigeria Naira and gave it to her boyfriend was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment with hard labour by the Suhum Magistrate’s court, presided over by Miss A. E. Kocouvi Tay.
The accused, Teniffer Bempong who appeared before the court last year on similar offence but signed a bond to be of good behaviour was charged with stealing and unlawful entry.
She pleaded guilty to the charges.
According to the prosecutor, Police Chief Inspector David K. Darko, the accused person, who is a niece to the complainant live at Asuboi near Suhum in Eastern Region while the complainant Gifty Aeker, a trader lives in Nigeria.
He said on July 6 this year, the complainant arrived in Ghana to attend a funeral of the late grand mother at Asuboi.
Chief Inspector Darko said, the complainant who had 100,000 Naira placed the money in her room and left for the funeral ground.
He said two days latter, the complainant detected that 22,000 Naira had been stolen out of the money and therefore initiated an investigations and got to know that while she was at the funeral, the accused person entered her room.
Chief Inspector Darko said the complainant therefore traced the accused person to Pokuase near Accra and confronted her and she confessed stealing the money and that she had given it to her boyfriend.
He said all attempts to trace the whereabouts of the boyfriend failed and the accused person was arrested and charged with the offence.
The Presiding Magistrate cautioned the youth, especially women who instead of doing some work for their livelihood, decided to indulged in crimes to enrich themselves over night.
