A 45-year-old sergeant of the Koforidua Police Depot has been brutally assaulted by a taxi-cab driver while performing his official duties.
Narrating his ordeal to the Spectator on Friday, Sergeant Peter Ayisah said he was detailed by his superiors to direct and check traffic offenders at the Koforidua Railway crossing traffic light last week Thursday.
He said at about 2:40 p.m., a taxi cab with registration number ER 440 W driven by Richard Akoto, 24, crossed the red-light at top speed.
Sergeant Ayisah said he managed to stop the driver, Akoto, and pointed out his offence to him but he begged for forgiveness, so he warned him and forgave him.
He said at about 11 :00 a.m. the following day, Akoto committed the same offence, but his plea was not accepted and he was taken to the Police Depot.
Sergeant Ayisah said on reaching the Barclays Bank area, the driver stopped the vehicle in the middle of the road and tried to run away, so he held his shirt to collect the car keys from him.
He said the driver started insulting him, threatening to kill him. Notwithstanding, Sergeant Ayisah said he asked the driver to get back to the steering wheel and removed the car from the middle of the road.
He said before he could say jack, Akoto slapped him twice and head-butted his nose and mouth, knocking off two of his upper front teeth instantly as blood oozed freely out his nose.
Sergeant Ayisah said he managed to call for reinforcement and the driver was arrested and taken into the Police Depot custody pending investigation and prosecution.
