The Government says its plan to review various tax exemptions will not affect existing agreements.
The government stated in the 2010 Budget that it would take a second look at the exemptions to rid it of certain abuses.
A number of institutions, from corporate through embassies to churches, are granted tax exemptions on various activities but there are indications that some beneficiaries cheat the system resulting in a loss of tax revenue.
The decision to review the tax exemption system however has been criticised by the private sector which says it smacks of inconsistency in government policy.
Though the Deputy Finance Minister, Seth Terkpeh concedes that government needs to be consistent with its programmes, he tells Joy Business that consistency does not mean that unsuitable systems shouldn’t be changed.
“I do agree that we should try and make the policies consistent for a while and see whether they would work. We would strive to make it exactly that but being consistent and trying to make businesses plan does not mean that we should not review that situation,” he told Joy Business.
