The Vice-Chancellor of the Tamale Technical University, Professor Abass Braimah has served notice that the management of the university will in the coming days launch a rescue mission to recover all furniture from students who have moved to their respective homes.
The operation dubbed "Operation Search and Rescue a Furniture" would see the management move into residents of students who live in neighbouring communities to recover the university's stolen furniture.
Two weeks ago, it was reported that students of the university threatened a strike action, alleging that they do not have furniture to sit on during lectures.
Addressing the first-year students at the third matriculation ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor said the university cannot realize its goal of rebirth, renewal and strive to make the Tamale Technical University a premier institution in Ghana if the very people they are working with are those sabotaging their efforts.
He said in as much as it is the students right to request what is due them, the university also has the right to ensure that what belongs to the school is protected.
Prof. Braimah urged the students to encourage their colleagues to return all the stolen furniture in their possession to the lecture rooms.
"I am reliably informed that most of our furniture has been removed by students to their residences in the neighboring communities, we cannot realize our goals of rebirth and renewal and strive to build Tamale Technical University into a premier institution in Ghana and globally if the very people we are working for are sabotaging the efforts" he stated.
The VC also indicated that the university has introduced two more programs in Bachelor of Tourism Management and Mechanical Engineering. He added that the school has also received administrative approval from the Ghana Tertiary Education Council to run twelve new Bachelor of Technology programs after accreditation.
The new programs include B. Tech in Food Science and Technology, B. Tech in Business Innovation Management, B. Tech in Welding and Fabrications, B. Tech in Logistics and Procurement Management and B. Tech in Building Technology, B. Tech in Applied Statistics, B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering, the rest are B. Tech in Automotive Engineering, B. Tech in Road and Transport Engineering, B. Tech in Architectural Wood and Furniture Production, B. Tech in Electricals and Electronics Engineering and B. Tech in Industrial Information Technology.
Prof. Braimah said these new programs are to offer employable technical and hands-on-career paths for students in line with the mandate of the Technical Universities.
"These are market-driven programs that are designed to offer requisite skills for both the local and international markets; it is anticipated that by the close of this year about 20 more B. Tech programs would be developed for accreditation and mounting" he said
Professor Abass Braimah said the university received a total of 3,689 applications for the 2020/2021 academic year and out of this number 3,584 were qualified and given the admission into various bachelor programs.
Out of the total, 1,429 of the admitted students are females and 2,095 are males. According to the Vice-Chancellor, this year saw a significant improvement in female enrollment.
He, however, highlighted challenges of infrastructure, water, furniture and staff as some of the constraints facing the school.
