The Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) in 2009 and 2010 saw a significant improvement in the number of doctors and other staff posted to the hospital.
The doctor population increased from 58 as at December 2009 to 102 as December 2010 bringing the total number of doctors in the hospital as at now to 110.
Dr. Ken Sagoe, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the TTH, said this at the 2010 Annual Performance Review of the hospital in Tamale on Monday.
He said the nursing level also witnessed a sustained increase from 309 in December 2009 to 450 in 2010.
"Only last week 146 have been posted for their rotations and we shall be hitting up to 660 in due course; it is still two thirds of the numbers we require to work optimally," Dr Sagoe said.
Dr. Sagoe said although the pharmacist numbers had also almost doubled the hospital still needed to recruit more within the next two years.
He said in response to the increasing number of highly trained health professionals to the hospital, Management had secured private residential accommodation at a very high cost of GH¢ 600,000 in order to retain them in Tamale.
Dr Sagoe said the hospital had completed the renovation of eight units of existing residential accommodation for use by health professionals.
He said as part of its objective of building human capacity, the hospital had supported and facilitated scholarships for health professionals to do postgraduate in Ghana and abroad and would return to build a strong future for the TTH.
Mr. Moses Bukari Mabengba, the Northern Regional Minister, commended the staff of the hospital for their invaluable service to humanity and pledged the cooperation and assistance of the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) in helping to solve the problems facing the hospital.
