Former President, John Mahama, urged graduates of Academic City University to be resilient and make a positive impact on the country as they step out into the corporate world.

Despite the challenges posed by the Russian-Ukraine war and domestic debt exchange, Mahama emphasised that the knowledge acquired during their studies should be used to make a difference.

Addressing the 2023 year group of Academic City University, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer drew attention to the pressing issue of unemployment in Ghana, which has reached its highest level in history, affecting approximately 13% of the population.

He highlighted that the economy is in crisis due to the closure of indigenous banks and the clean-up of the banking sector, affecting Ghanaian entrepreneurs, middle-class families, and pensioners’ savings.

Make an impact despite economic hardships - Mahama urges Academic City graduates

“Unemployment in Ghana today is at its highest in our history, estimated at about 13% of the population. Our economy is in crisis. Several jobs have been lost by the closure of indigenous banks and the banking sector clean-up. The debt exchange operation has led to massive haircuts that is eroding, the capital of Ghanaian entrepreneurs, the income of middle-class families, and even the savings of poor pensioners,” he stated.

Nevertheless, Mahama expressed confidence in the graduates’ abilities to confront and overcome these challenges.

“There are challenges out there in the world to be confronted but with the appropriate tailoring of the knowledge, skills, theories, models, and frameworks that you have acquired from this college. These challenges are by all means surmountable, particularly if you are ready and willing to think creatively. And I know you have big dreams. You have big ideas that will help lift your families and our dear nation out of poverty. I want you to go out there and make a positive mark on the world. I believe in you, and so you must believe in yourselves,” he added.

The President of Academic City, Prof Fred McBagonluri, also emphasized the significance of embracing failure as a stepping stone to success.

“Failure is not an antithesis of success. Rather, it is an essential component of it. Accept failure as a teacher and a mentor. Every obstacle presents an opportunity for development, learning and resiliency. Instead of being disheartened by the inevitable roadblocks, learn valuable lessons from them. Remember that the most successful people in history endured normal setbacks prior to attaining greatness.”

Meanwhile, the overall best student of the 2023-year group, Daniella Ishioma Omenogor, expresses her gratitude and urges final-year final-year students to stay focused on their academics.

As part of measures to support the drive towards the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Academic City University College has launched a project dubbed “Sustain City Project” to help address SDGs 6, 8 and 11.

The Sustain City Project, a sustainable plastic waste management programme, is an initiative of Academic City’s STEMEP Club in partnership with Mckingtorch Africa.

The project consists of recovering plastic waste generated, documenting the data with a weighing programme, entering the data into a plastic waste global marketplace software, aggregating the recovered waste, selling it to recycling companies, and using some of the proceeds to launch a community buy-back initiative.

Academic City launches initiative to help achieve SDGs

It is expected that the project will encourage communities, especially women and youth, to bring plastic waste in exchange for money while considering appropriate plastic waste reduction strategies for the Ghanaian community.

The event brought together representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Ga East Municipal Assembly, Ghana Recycling Initiative by Private Enterprises, Voltic Ghana, and Mckingtorch Africa, among others.

Speaking at the launch, H.E. Gregory Andrews, Australian High Commissioner to Ghana, commended Academic City for developing the “Sustain City Project,” which will significantly contribute to resolving the plastic waste menace in Ghana.

The ocean produces 70% of the world’s oxygen, but 8 million tons of plastic end up in water bodies each year. This is causing catastrophic climate change on earth.

According to the UNDP, if proper plastic waste management measures are not implemented, there will be more plastic in the oceans.

STEM is very critical in addressing the issue of climate change. “We need to develop new technologies to keep the planet safe and secure from plastic-related issues,” H.E. Andrews stated.

He was optimistic that the innovative “Sustain City Project” will go a long way toward encouraging people to properly dispose of plastic garbage.

Dr Francis Boateng Agyenim, Director of CSIR-Institute of Industrial Research, who spoke on behalf of the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, noted that government is developing a pilot project that will effectively collect plastic waste for recycling and reuse purposes at the municipal level.

“The Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation acknowledges the “Sustain City Project” and plans to adopt the giant receptacle as one of the pilot projects in the assembly,” he announced.

Prof. Fred McBagonluri, President and Provost of Academic City, called for the introduction of Sustainable Development as a programme at the tertiary level to help facilitate the realization of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

According to him, “The issue of sustainable development tends to apply to every facet of human endeavour and must be given critical and necessary attention.”

Tertiary education plays a critical and positive role in the development of every nation. The increasing global recognition of relevant tertiary education as a major driver of economic transformation has contributed to the growing demand for high-quality tertiary education.

To this end, educational institutions the world over are focused on training problem solvers, applying available human and technological resources.

In Ghana, relevant tertiary education remains a key consideration on the country’s development agenda for obvious reasons. To ensure accelerated industrial growth for improved livelihood of Ghanaians as well as economic development, there is the need for higher education institutions both public and private to equip graduates with job-relevant skills to meet the demands of the job market.

Over the years, the disconnect between tertiary education and skills required for the job market have featured highly on studies and public discourses. Key industry players such as the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) have in the past expressed concern over the lack of requisite skilled, as well as professional and competent labour force for the fast growing and changing industry.

Former President of AGI, Mr. James Asare Adjei at the CEO’s Breakfast and British Council Skills Hub Launch remarked “You have young graduates who are looking for employment and they say they can’t find jobs but we have employers in industry who also say they have so many vacancies they cannot fill them.

The question is how do we reconcile the two and ensure the gaps are filled. I think what we can do is the businesses themselves are trying to work with academic institutions to give the needed capacity building to the young graduates to fit the needs of the industry.”

In an effort to equip graduates to become relevant and competitive in the job market, Academic City College, a fast developing premium university in Ghana was established to offer innovative programmes tailored toward preparing students with the necessary skills and professional training to help them unlock their future.

Academic City University College has launched its innovative Bachelor of Business Administration in Entrepreneurship programme.

The programme which is expected to commence September, 2020 will equip students with requisite skills to build competence in entrepreneurial and management functions.

It will also enable them to work across various disciplines as well as knowledge that enables them to set up their businesses.

This unique programme will seek to encourage and support the incubation and acceleration of concepts or projects that students may have coming into the programme or developed during their course of study to help them transition concepts into enterprise before or soon after graduation.

Research has shown that the skill set of entrepreneurs and enterprising people will increase in the coming decades.

Not only do entrepreneurs drive economic growth but often socially-oriented entrepreneurs also contribute to solutions on environmental and social issues.

Employers also need workers who combine holistic problem-solving and analytical skills with relevant knowledge and such entrepreneurial competencies as pro-activity, independence, flexibility, perseverance, and sound communication skills.

According to the President of Academic City, Prof. Fred McBagonluri, the university is committed to playing a vital role in the building and sustaining of entrepreneurial culture among the young generation on the African continent.

“Our flagship entrepreneurship programme will provide students with a thorough grounding in developing businesses from a practical perspective hence grounding them in enterprise management. This will help to immerse them in the startup world and enable them to develop their own enterprises,” he said.

He further stressed “currently, large enterprises tend to recruit young people who have entrepreneurial spirit and skills to drive organizational growth.

This propelled us to develop this innovative programme to nurture students to be creative, innovative and goal-driven to keep a competitive edge and be ready for the future global marketplaces”

Dr. Linda Deigh, Dean of Faculty of Business, Entrepreneurship and Communication Arts expressed optimism that the new programme will produce young and skilled entrepreneurs who will take advantage of today’s dynamic entrepreneurial environment.

“We look forward to welcoming our first entrepreneurship cohorts next academic year to equip them with the necessary skills to help them identify industrial and societal problems and create solutions through exploring key learning in business start-ups, and venture growth and development” she said.

Following the negative impact of the deadly novel COVID-19 pandemic on the world economy and individual livelihoods, Academic City has introduced a special study package to help reduce the financial burden on parents seeking tertiary education for their children this year.

The special study package will include an extended limited period of an early bird tuition reduction up to 50% for selected programmes. This innovative incentive will apply to both local and foreign students.
