A suspected armed robber was killed on Monday night during a gun battle between the police and six highwaymen at Mankranso in the Ahafo-Ano South District of the Ashanti Region.
The five others, all of whom are believed to have sustained gunshot wounds, however escaped.
Briefing the Daily Graphic in Kumasi yesterday, the Public Affairs Officer of the Ashanti Regional Police, Inspector Yusif Mohammed Tanko, appealed to the public, especially workers at medical facilities in country, to be on the lookout for persons who might turn up to seek treatment for gunshot wounds.
He said the deceased, believed to be in his mid 20s, was yet to be identified but his body had been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) morgue.
He said about 9p.m. on that day, the Mankranso Police had information that the alleged robbers had barricaded a section of the Biemso Number Two Road near Adugyama and were robbing pedestrians and drivers of their valuables. The police quickly rushed there but realised that the robbers had moved away from the area so they combed the area and managed to trace the robbers to the road that linked the Kumasi trunk road to Sabronum.
The robbers had blocked the road with a VW LT 40 vehicle, with registration number AS 9386 P, which they had seized from one of their victims.
Inspector Tanko said on seeing the police, the robbers opened fire and the police responded. After some minutes of the exchanges, the robbers fled into the nearby bush.
He said the police chased the robbers until one of them fell and died, apparently from gunshots received during the exchanges.
The police later retrieved the VW vehicle used to block the road and a Ford Sierra saloon car, with registration number BA 805 P, which had also been used by the robbers at a fuel station at Beposo, near Mankranso.
