One of the suspects standing trial at the Sunyani Magistrate Court "B" for lynching Mr Anthony Yeboah Boateng, the Senior Health Service Administrator of the Goaso Government Hospital, at Atronie last month was arrested when he attempted to escape from the cells of the Sunyani Municipal Police Station.
Hamidu Adama, 21, a mason, who attempted to break portions of the wall of the cells to escape, has been remanded in prison custody by the same court, presided over by Mr Albert Zoogah.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge of escaping from lawful custody and is to reappear on Monday, May 8, the same day all the 31 suspects charged with murder will appear.
Presenting the facts of the case in court, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Martin Defeamekpor said the accused had been facing a charge of murder pending before the court and had been remanded in prison custody on April 26.
He said the accused feigned illness at the prison and had been brought back to the Sunyani Municipal Police Station cells for treatment at the Sunyani Regional Hospital.
ASP Defeamekpor told the court that while in cell, Adama managed to secure a spoon, with which he scraped a large portion of the cell to escape from custody.
The prosecutor said that act took place in the toilet, and he did that gradually with the aid of water to soften the wall so that immediately he pushed it down, he would get an exit point to escape.
He told the court that some of the inmates of the cells saw the accused in the act and alerted the police. The accused was arrested and the spoon, an amount of 500 CFA franc, a dollar note and ¢10,000 were found on him.
