A suspect on a police wanted list has assaulted two policemen when they attempted to arrest him on Tuesday.
The incident, which happened in front of the offices of the Ghana News Agency office at Koforidua, attracted scores of people who watched as police battled to arrest the suspect.
They called reinforcement, arrested the suspect and sent him to the Regional Police Headquarters.
Chief Inspector Dela Dzokoto said a taxi driver lodged a complain two weeks ago that two men hired his taxi at Effiduase, a suburb of Koforidua and robbed him of his day's sales and a mobile phone.
The driver told the police that policemen on patrol helped him to arrest the two suspects after he had raised an alarm.
But one Kwaku Azakah, attacked the policemen and smashed the windscreen of the police vehicle and in the confusion, the suspects escaped.
Chief Inspector Dzokoto said the policeman and the taxi driver then lodged a complaint at Galloway Police Station and the police subsequently mounted a search for Azakah and the other suspects.
The assaulted policeman was on duty at the Apex Bank on Tuesday when he spotted Azakah entering the bank and informed him that the police wanted him so he should follow him to the station.
Azakah told the policeman that he would not go and that the police should come to his office.
An attempt by the policeman and a colleague to arrest Azakah resulted in a scuffle during which Azakah assaulted the two policemen.
The two policemen had weapons on them and despite receiving hefty blows from Azakah they did not use their guns and managed to hold on until the reinforcement team arrived.
