The graphic above shows Joy Sports projection made on August 7, detailing who we thought would be relegated after matchday 30. So far, we've been pretty accurate.

Take a look at the Premier League table (show below). Pause. Look at it again and observe the points tally from 6th to 15th.

It is mind-boggling that on the last day of the season, not one, not two, not three, but TEN teams can mathematically be relegated.

Four points separate Berekum Chelsea (6th) from Great Olympics (15th) heading into the last matchday. All of these teams can go down. It is Ghana’s version of last day league drama. We can’t afford to miss it.

RELEGATION CONTENDERS:
Berekum Chelsea, Wa All Stars, WAFA, Heart of Lions, Kotoko, Hasaacas, Edubiase, Medeama, Bechem United, Olympics.

HOW TO ESCAPE:

Win the last game, have superior points advantage over fellow strugglers. In the case of having the same points, have a better head to head record, if that is also a tie (away goals’ rule does count here), have a superior goal advantage.

Team-by-team permutations

BEREKUM CHELSEA:

Should the unexpected happen and Chelsea lose their home game against Wa All Stars, the Blues will be stuck on 41 points. Out of the contenders, only Olympics cannot make or better this tally which could send the Berekum side down. This is highly unlikely. Chelsea’s worst on the day could be a draw. The unbeaten home record will not be relinquished. Medeama and Bechem are the only teams that can make exactly 41. Chelsea have a better head to head record against the Bechem side but would go down against Medeama. WAFA and Heart of Lions with draws can also make the 41 points. Chelsea have a better head to head record against both clubs.

WA ALL STARS:

The Wa side are in a similar position as Berekum Chelsea. They currently have 41 points and will have to enter a head-to-head battle with Medeama and Bechem United should they win and Heart of Lions and WAFA should they draw.  Olympics cannot match up to Wa All Stars’ points tally meaning only one slot remains for relegation. A draw looks likely on the card against Chelsea on Sunday but should they lose, their chances of going down are very slim.

WAFA:

The Sogakope side hit the 40 point mark few weeks ago but two successive losses have meant they have been dragged into the relegation pool. A win or draw against Accra Hearts of Oak will be enough to see the Sogakope play another league season but a defeat can all but end the stay of the academy side. 

HEART OF LIONS:

The Kpando side on the evidence of recent trend look likely to go down on this matchday despite their impressive win over Olympics on matchday 29. Lions’ face Edubiase in Obuasi and a defeat will send the Kpando side down. The permutations for the Kpando side are simple. Get a point or all points and stay up .They cannot afford to slip. This is because any point gained on the day will see them above their hosts Edubiase and Olympics irrespective of what happens in their game against league champions Ashantigold.

KOTOKO:

What a massive difference three points can make? Kotoko can end up being the fifth or sixth depending on results from other grounds. All being said, Kotoko are three points away from pushing high up the log but should the unexpected happen and the Porcupines lose or drop points, it could end up being a calamitous campaign for the former league champions. A draw or defeat is highly unlikely for the Porcupine Warriors.

HASAACAS:

The giants from the west, just like Kotoko, have their destiny in their hands. A draw against Liberty will be suicidal as that will leave Hasmal with 40 points and an inferior head-to-head record against Olympics. This means the Wonder Boys will climb over them should they beat Ashantigold. Hasmal have to win, and premiership football will stay in Sekondi.

NEW EDUBIASE:

Edubiase’s case is straightforward but could yet be difficult. Win and stay up or lose and get relegated. The Bekwai side come face-to-face against the Kpando side who are also in a precarious situation which makes their duel the match of the round. Anthony Commey’s side currently have 39 points and anything short of three points could spell their end. A draw in the game against Lions will only give them advantage over Olympics whom they have a better head-to-head record with but they will then have to rely on Bechem United dropping points against BA United (which is unlikely),  or Medeama, Kotoko or Hasaacas dropping points.

MEDEAMA:

The FA Cup champions face Inter Allies in Tarkwa. With home advantage and knowing what is at stake, the Yellow and Mauves should and must win. Should they lose, it will be adiós to the reigning cup champions without many computations. A draw will mean relying on all three of Bechem, Kotoko and Hasaacas losing.

BECHEM UNITED:

Lord Zico’s side were projected to be relegated by the Joy Sports team. But but after an impressive draw away at inter Allies, the Bechem side now hold their destiny in their hands. No better way for them, too, than a home game against the already relegated B.A United. A Bechem United win will mean they will finish above Olympics and either Edubiase or Lions as both clubs clash. A draw or defeat - which is highly unlikely for Bechem - will mean relegation.

GREAT OLYMPICS:

The Wonder Club have the most complicated of all the permutations. A win will still not guarantee them safety as they need two rivals to slip in order to survive this year's league. Aside the Edubiase and Lions game where points will surely be dropped, Olympics will still need Bechem, Medeama, Hasaacas or Kotoko to lose. Quite daunting, but not impossible.
