Following the entry or Busy Ghana into the 4G LTE space, the leading player in that space, Surfline Communication has started offering bigger data bundles for less.
Busy Ghana made its intentions to beat the market with affordability right from the launch of its services last month, but Surfline responded swiftly by first introducing an unlimited bundle, and has now followed up with more data for less on Surfplus bundles in particular.
At its launch Busy introduced 1GB for GHC17, against Surfline's 1GB for GHC19 and GHC25. Busy also priced it 50GB bundle at GHC400 while Surfline's 50GB bundle ranged between GHC455 and GHC499.
All other bundles in between 1GB and 50GB were cheaper on Busy than on Surfline, except the Surfline bundles also came with bonuses in the form of stated data, while Busy's bonuses were freebies customers could choose from.
But now Surfline has taken the competition to another level by dropping the bonuses and adding up to the various primary bundles while maintaining the prices.
For instance, for its Surfplus bundles, GHC19 now buys one 1.5GB primary data instead of 1GB, while the company has just introduced a new 3GB data bundle for GHC29 and even 1MB for 5Gp.
Surfline used to sell 5GB for GHC69 but now 8GB goes for the same price, while the new 15GB goes for GHC129; 30GB for GHC239 and a whopping 75GB for just GHC499, which means there is an additional 25GB to the 50GB bundle for the same price.
3G market
On the 3G market, it is not quite clear who is offering the most affordable bundle as the bundles vary in size on various networks. What is however clear is that, whereas Airtel has a 100GB bundle that sells at about GHC3 1GB, MTN's 100GB bundles sells for about GHC8 per 1GB.
The other interesting fact is that a lot of the 3G bundles are even more expensive than Surfline's Surfplus 4G LTE bundles, but not necessarily more expensive than Busy's.
MTN is gearing up to enter the 4G space later this year and their entry is expected to push prices even further down because MTN has an overwhelmingly larger number of customers than all the 4G players put together and is likely to beat the market with economies of scale.
But until then, Surfline has stepped up the game for new comer Busy Ghana in the price war and consumers stand to benefit because Busy is likely to respond to Surfline's move soon.
