Sunyani Krontihene describes his indefinite suspension as illegal

Krontihene of Sunyani Traditional Area, Oboa-Aman Bofotia Boa-Amponsem II.

The suspended Krontihene of the Sunyani Traditional Area, Oboa-Aman Bofotia Boa-Amponsem II, says he has served his initial two-year suspension term and has therefore returned to perform his roles as the substantive Krontihene of the Sunyani Traditional Area.

He said he quashed an indefinite suspension letter served him by the Sunyani Traditional Council (STC), insisting he remains the Krontihene.

Addressing a press conference in Sunyani on Monday, Nana Boa-Amponsem explained that he received a letter on March 28, 2024, signed by Nana Akusua Dua Asor-Sika Brayie II, the Queen Mother of Sunyani Traditional Area and her Abusuapanin, Opanin Kwasi Yeboah, that he (Oboa-Aman Bofotia Boa-Amponsem) has been suspended indefinitely.

He further said he was served a follow-up letter, signed by Nana Kwaku Sarbeng II (the Akwamuhene and the Acting President of the Council) and eight others supporting the indefinite suspension letter.

But, Nana Boa-Amponsem, at the press conference, described the letters as "illegal, unmerited, and incapacitated".

"The Queen Mother and the Abusuapanin have no legal capacity to suspend me or any member of the Traditional Council because none of them is a member of the STC, a statutory body created by the Chieftaincy Act," he said.

According to Nana Boa-Amponsem II, the initial suspension on April 1, 2022, was a deliberate act of injustice action meted out to him after he was accused of distorting the historical facts of Sunyani in an interview with Joy News for the Ghana Months Series story in 2021 on the origin of the name Sunyani.

"The letter was signed by the late Paramount Chief of Sunyani Traditional Area, Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri II, and Nana Kwasi Obiri Yeboah (Abusuapanin of Boahenkorkor royal family), who is not a Chief and a non-member of the STC," he stated.

"I have duly served the two-year suspension under protest before the High Court in Sunyani, where I'm seeking a redress by issuing a prerogative writ of a certiorari to quash the purported suspension pending before the High Court".

Nana Oboa-Aman Boa-Amponsem II alleged a secret meeting between the STC and the elders of the Krontire family where the elders of the Krontire Stool had been requested to produce another person to be installed and enstooled as a Krontihene.

"I am stating categorically that I'm the substantive Krontihene of the Sunyani Traditional Area, and I have not been destooled or under any sanction whatsoever," he said.

"I'm informing the whole world that I have not been legally destooled, I have not abdicated, and I shall not and never do such a thing to the Great Stool of Oboa-Aman Bofotia," he added.

He noted that the purported legal suspension by the late Omanhene ended March 27, 2024, and he shall continue to pursue the injustice meted out to him in the last two years".

Nana Boa-Amponsem II said, "Suspension does not mean dismissal or overthrow. Therefore, Oboa-Aman Boa-Amponsem remains the Kontihene of Sunyani. Therefore, the purported suspension has ended, and I am fully back to business as Sunyani Krontihene."

He emphasized that the historical facts of Sunyani remain that "Boahenkorkor and Nana Bofotia (both hunters) in the 17th Century settled on a parcel of land they named 'Asonodwae' (a place of flaying elephants), now corrupted into Sunyani".

Nana Boa-Amponsem reiterated that he was wrongly accused of narrating such a short history of Sunyani to Joy News, which bordered on the relationship of his ancestors of the Krontire Stool and the Boahene Korkor Stool (the Omanhene Stool) of Sunyani.

Meanwhile, the Royal Boahenkorkor family of the Sunyani Traditional Area, in 2021, disputed the claims made by Nana Bofotia Boa-Amponsem in the Joy News Ghana Month series story.
