Sunderland manager Steve Bruce is ready to splash the £8million he picked up from the sale of Kenwyne Jones on Ghana World Cup star Asamoah Gyan.
The 24-year-old forward was a revelation in South Africa, scoring three goals before he missed the crucial penalty that could have taken Ghana into the last four.
But the powerful forward showed enough to attract a host of interest and Rennes are ready to cash in.
Bruce has admitted he wants to land one mouth-watering signing before the transfer window closes.
The Black Stars striker is that man and the Sunderland manager reckons that Gyan and Darren Bent will provide the goals to get the club near to a top-10 finish.
Bruce has to wheel and deal in the transfer market this summer but he can use the funds he has created – around £13million – to add more firepower to his young Sunderland side.
Crucially the forward wants to move to England and believes Sunderland have the ambition to match his own.
