Ghana international Sulley Muntari is likely to make his Sunderland debut at Stoke on Saturday, with Lee Cattermole ruled out for another month.
The Ghanaian, on loan from Inter Milan, has played just once in the past two months.
And having been frozen out at the San Siro, the 26-year-old is desperately short of game-time, despite being a regular for two years under Jose Mourinho.
But with his resources stretched to the limit, manager Steve Bruce is ready to throw him in against Stoke as sixth-placed Sunderland look to bounce back from their 4-2 home defeat by Chelsea.
Muntari missed that game after flying back to Italy to sort out his visa, but is eligible this weekend.
Captain Cattermole’s back problem, which has already sidelined him for five weeks, has not responded to treatment, with the midfielder requiring another month’s rest.
