A student with physical challenge at the University of Ghana, Isaiah Amada Awuku, who covers 26 kilometers weekly in a manual wheelchair to lectures, has received help after a JoyNews report.

His journey, once marked by sweat and persistence, has taken a remarkable turn, thanks to the generosity of individuals moved by his story.

In August, the JoyNews feature series titled “This Abled,” produced by Emmanuel Dzivenu, highlighted Isaiah’s struggle, a tale of grit and resilience that captured the hearts of many. His relentless determination to chase his academic dreams despite his physical challenges stirred an outpouring of compassion.

The young student no longer has to strain his arms for miles. Two electronic wheelchairs have been gifted to him, one from the Ghana Statistical Association and another from a group of friends - Dr. James Lebeau, Mr. Thomas Muglia and Mr. Jeff Looker - residing in Arizona and Texas in the U.S.

The Ghana Statistical Association has also awarded him a full scholarship for his master’s degree, provided essential textbooks, and extended financial support for his upkeep.

At a brief presentation ceremony in Accra, President of the Association, Prof. Nicholas Nsowah-Nuamah, said the gesture is a necessary act to ensure that Isaiah can focus on his studies and aspirations without the constant burden of his physical limitations.

For Isaiah, these donations represent more than just mobility - they represent hope.

"I’m beyond grateful. I cannot put into words how much this means to me. It’s a blessing," he expressed, his voice filled with emotion.

Isaiah, however, has a heart as generous as the gifts he has received. He plans to donate one of the wheelchairs to someone who, like him, knows the struggles of getting through life with a physical challenge. He believes that the kindness extended to him should be paid forward.

His mother, Margaret Awuku, overwhelmed with gratitude, watched as her son received the donations. She had witnessed his struggle, and now she could see the beginning of a new chapter, one filled with opportunity and relief.

What started as a story of hardship has become a demonstration of the power of compassion and generosity.

Isaiah Amada-Awuku’s journey is no longer defined by the kilometers he had to push, but by the miles he can now soar.
