Striking railway workers resume work

The striking railway workers have called off their two-month strike. That followed endless interventions by various groups and agencies in the country. The workers have been striking for the past two months demanding unpaid salaries and improvement in general conditions of service. They also demanded the resignation of the Managing Director of the Ghana Railway Company, Mr. Rufus Quaye. The workers say the decision to resume work was arrived at after they signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Ports, Harbours and Railways. Last week the workers rescinded their decision to call of the strike saying they had been infuriated by the decision of the National Labour Commission to go to court over the matter. The NLC filed a writ at the court to compel the workers to call off the strike. But the workers said they were prepared to meet the NLC in court. The Trades Union Congress intervened because the prolonged strike was crippling the company. Some of the workers told Joy News that the deal was reached on Tuesday, April 1, 2008. According to the agreement, Mr. Quaye would be investigated regarding the allegations made against him by the workers. They say they will start work by checking the tracks to ensure it would be safe for the coaches to run on them. The first shuttle is expected to move by Friday, April 1, 2008.
