Former management member of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Dr Kwame Baah-Nuakoh, has called for a new direction to sports funding and urged the country to stop rewarding mediocrity.
Dr Baah-Nuako who is the General Manager, sustainability at Ghana National Petroleum Corporation said the country must spend its meagre resources on the sporting disciplines which produces the best results.
He cited the Black Stars as an example and questioned why players continue to be rewarded with huge bonuses in the last two decades despite returning from major tournaments empty handed.
“We should move away from a system we are rewarding mediocrity. We have a national soccer team that has won nothing for several despite spending millions of dollars but we keep on saying it the passion of the nation. It is the passion of the nation yes. However, we have to stop rewarding mediocrity”.
The amount of money payed to players of the Black Stars has become a burning issue in recent years due to the absence of trophies. For many, Ghana is not getting value for money. Dr Baah-Nuako believes Ghanaian sportsmen should be rewarded based on performance.
“I believe that the funding amount we put into Ghana soccer every year should be a function of the results that they bring”.
