Former Auditor General Daniel Yao Domelevo has urged government officials to stop interfering with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and called on the president to fully support the OSP in fulfilling its mandate.

Speaking at the 2024 Domelevo Accountability Lectures, he highlighted that the Special Prosecutor recently survived a petition for removal.

Despite his initial disapproval of the OSP, Domelevo emphasized the need to support the office in its fight against corruption.

He recounted his collaboration with the first Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, and stressed the importance of giving the institution the necessary support to combat corruption effectively.

Domelevo expressed concern over the current Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, facing significant challenges that hinder his work.

He called on government officials to protect Agyebeng and let him do his job, noting, “He seems to be the only person serious about fighting corruption.”

“Institutional and legal frameworks are not enough to effectively combat corruption, and that is the state in which we have found ourselves here in Ghana. After establishing the institutions, we must give them the oxygen to breathe,” Domelevo stated.

Reflecting on his tenure, he admitted his initial scepticism about the OSP Bill but decided to support it if it could help in the fight against corruption.

He collaborated closely with Amidu until the latter was pressured out of office.

Domelevo then pointed out Agyebeng’s current struggles, urging the government to protect and support him. “So please, government officials and people in government, leave the Special Prosecutor alone.

"He seems to be the only person serious about corruption today, from my point of view. So let’s give him the oxygen for him to be able to do his work.”
