Former Ghana captain, Stephen Appiah has confirmed that he has been approached by the Ghana Football Association to play a technical role for the Black Stars ahead of the 2015 African Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea.
Speaking on JOY FM over the weekend, Appiah said the reason for his engagement by the GFA is an indication that he did a good job for the technical team during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
It would be recalled that Stephen Appiah was part of the backroom staff of former Ghana coach, Kwesi Appiah during the 2014 World Cup and was said to be influential in an attempt to stop players of the national team from boycotting the final Group G game against Portugal at the height of the infamous appearance fee brouhaha.
Appiah was unwilling to disclose the nature of his role for Ghana during the 2015 Afcon but said he was ready for whatever role he is asked to play to ensure Ghana lifts the trophy.
‘I am not doing it for the GFA; I am doing it for Ghana. I am ready and up for the challenge. I have learnt a lot from the World Cup and it would help me to prevent a repeat of what happened in Brazil. That thing must not happen again.’
Ghana have been housed in Group C alongside Algeria, Senegal and South Africa.
Meanwhile, Appiah is set to launch the ‘Tornado Ball” Monday, December 15, 2014 at the residence of the British High Commissioner to Ghana.
The ‘Tornado Ball” is a football made in Ghana and named after Appiah for his contribution to Ghana football and his benevolence in society.
The balls are to be sold and proceeds from it will be used to help the less privileged in society.
