The Sanitation and Water Resources Minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, has cautioned farmers to desist from encroaching on the buffer zone.
According to the Minister, her outfit has been provided with information that farmers, who are supposed to be 100m away, are within the zone, planting.
"We had reports that people had farmed in the buffer zone. The policy is that every water source, both sides of the source should be given 100m buffer. So we grow trees that give shade to the water source.
It is not for people to farm where they will still pick the scarce water and go and water their farms. It is not allowed. Every farmer should be 100m off. We wouldn't want to wait for people to encroach before we go and fight them. We want to be proactive."
To prevent further encroachment, Mrs. Dapaah told JoyNews' Manuel Koranteng that the Ministry will collaborate with the Forestry Commission and the Ministry for Lands and Natural Resources to plant seedlings around the demarcated area.
Speaking during a tour of the Nsawam Water Treatment Plant, the Sanitation Minister also noted that the Ghana Water Company Limited produces one of the best potable water in the world.
She said this while commending the Management and staff for properly managing the water treatment plant.
"We commend the District manager and the staff and the headquarters for keeping an eye on neatness. It is very essential. Ghana Water produces one of the best potable water in the world. It is not bragging or exaggerated. We have the labs that keep the pH level constantly with the WHO standard."
However, the Sanitation Minister disclosed some challenges being faced with the production of water.
"The 65-year-old plant has been shutdown for rehabilitation and the 8-year-old plant is the one supplying water to 3,600 people. What we need to do is to rehabilitate the old one to add up the volumes," she said.
