Deputy Housing Minister, Dr Prince Hamid Armah, has emphasised the need for broad collaboration to ensure the successful implementation of the ambitious plan to decarbonise the building and construction sector
Addressing participants at the AH Hotel in Accra on October 24, he underscored that the roadmap represents more than just a government initiative—it is a call to action for all sectors involved in building and construction.
“The success of this roadmap depends on the collaboration of all stakeholders—government entities, the private sector, financial institutions, and civil society,” Dr. Armah stressed.
He called on every sector to contribute their expertise and resources to help reduce emissions in the construction industry, which accounts for over 37% of global energy-related carbon emissions, according to the United Nations Environment Programme.
Dr. Armah noted that Ghana’s rapid urbanisation and economic growth have increased the demand for construction materials, making it essential to adopt sustainable practices.
“With an urban population of around 58% and an urbanization rate of 3.3%, the demand for construction materials has surged to accommodate our rapidly growing cities,” he said.
The roadmap, developed in partnership with UN-Habitat and UNOPs, outlines several key strategies for decarbonising the construction sector.
These include promoting energy-efficient systems, using green building materials, advancing water conservation, and fostering innovative technologies.
Dr Armah described the roadmap as a “blueprint for meaningful change” that provides clear goals and action points for the future of the sector.
He further highlighted the importance of designing structures that are resilient to climate change and implementing sustainable urban planning.
“Our built environment deeply influences our quality of life and represents our values and culture. Let us ensure that it also reflects our unwavering commitment to sustainability,” he urged.
As Dr. Armah officially launched the roadmap, he called on participants to engage actively in its implementation.
“I urge everyone here to actively engage, share expertise, and collaborate to achieve the vision we have outlined,” he said.
He expressed optimism that through cooperation and innovation, Ghana can build a greener and more sustainable future for generations to come.
