Asamoah Gyan is a figure loved, hated and then loved again by his legion of fans worldwide.
Asamoah Gyan is a hugely talented forward capable of playing as a lone striker, spear-heading the attack or filling the hole between the front two and the midfield, weighing in with his fair share of goals, incisive passing and excellent ball distribution.
Gyan’s love-hate relationship with his adoring fan’s stems from his ability to be absolutely brilliant in one moment (as was evident during the 2010 Nations Cup in Angola) and entirely off-colour and out of sorts in the next(2008 Nations Cup in Ghana).
The 23 year old currently plies his trade at French Ligue 1 outfit Stade Renne, where after 10 goals in his first season in Ligue 1, is finally showing the consistency his wealth of talent deserves.
Asamoah Gyan began his professional football career at Accra- based Liberty Professionals before moving to Udinese in 2003.
Gyan spent two years on loan at Serie B club Modena. The 2006 FIFA World Cup then followed at which Asamoah Gyan’s claim to fame would be scoring the fastest goal at the tournament and Ghana’s first ever World Cup goal at the 2006 World Cup.
Asamoah’s sparkling form at the Mundial ensured that Udinese signed the high in demand striker to a long term deal. Asamoah Gyan departed Udinese for France and Stade Renne in July, 2008 after scoring a combined total of 25 goals for Modena and Udinese during his 5 year stay in Italy.
Stade Rennes fortunes have been on the up and up this season, thanks in no small part to Gyan’s stellar return of 3 assists and 10 goals in 22 games, the latest being a 39th minute strike against Valencienne , that gave Rennes their first away win in Ligue 1 since December.
Asamoah Gyan, it would seem, has finally made consistency a part of his game, a part Ghanaians hope to see more of when Ghana line up to face Serbia on 13th June in Pretoria, South Africa.
State Renne, on the other hand will hope their charge up the French Ligue 1 table continues this Saturday, 20th March on Joy Sports on Multi-TV at 6:00pm, when they welcome Toulouse to the Stade de la Route-de-Lorient where Gyan-who else- will lead the way.
