Ghana’s Black Queens have been drawn against defending champions South Africa in the group stages of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Ghana, who are making a return to the competition after missing out on the last two editions, will also go up against Mali and Tanzania in group C.

Record champions, Nigeria, have been drawn in group B along with Tunisia, Algeria and Botswana.

2022 finalists and hosts, Morocco, have been paired with Zambia, Senegal and DR Congo.

2024 WAFCON: Ghana drawn against defending champions South Africa in Group C

The top two in each group will automatically qualify for the quarterfinals, together with the two best third place teams.

Ghana will be looking to book a return to the FIFA Women’s World Cup, after an 18 year absence, and a semifinal place will be enough to secure a place.

The WAFCON will take place between 5 to 26 July, 2025.

German-based physiotherapy company Kanzlsperger, in partnership with Ghanaian physiotherapist Professor Jonathan Quartey, has donated essential medical equipment to the West Africa Football Academy (WAFA).

The presentation ceremony was held on Friday morning at WAFA’s training grounds in Sogakope.

WAFA head coach Saddick Abubakar expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the team.

“We are grateful to Professor Quartey for these items,” he said. “The technical team and players appreciate this generous gesture, as these are costly resources that will greatly enhance our work as a team.”

Jan Gosgens, Managing Director of WAFA, also commended Professor Quartey for his continued support.

“We are very grateful for this donation,” Gosgens said. “Professor Quartey has been part of the WAFA family for years.

“He was one of our physiotherapists during the Feyenoord era, and the bond remains strong. His unwavering commitment to the club is something we deeply value, and we look forward to achieving more together in the future.”

Speaking after the presentation, Professor Quartey shared the inspiration behind his gesture.

“My relationship with WAFA dates back many years,” he explained. “I worked with the club for 11 years before their relocation to Sogakope, and we’ve maintained a connection, particularly in the area of human resource support.

“I am passionate about rehabilitation and player welfare, so I felt it was important to provide these items to aid the club’s efforts in this regard.”

Professor Quartey is no stranger to such acts of generosity. Just last week, he made a similar donation to Accra Shooting Stars.

From 2003 to 2014, Professor Quartey worked with WAFA—then known as Feyenoord Academy—at their Gomoa Fetteh base before the club moved to Sogakope.

WAFA currently competes in Zone 2 of the National Division Two League, with hopes of leveraging such support to achieve greater success.

Ghanaian football icon Abdul Karim ‘Golden Boy’ Razak received a distinguished honor at the WAFU B General Assembly in Niamey, Niger, on Friday.

The 1978 African Footballer of the Year was present as a special guest, joining a notable assembly of football stakeholders from across the sub-region.

The gathering included presidents and general secretaries from seven member associations, along with zonal leaders and renowned former African football stars.

Razak, celebrated for his remarkable career, was recognized alongside other football legends such as Moumouni Dagano from Burkina Faso, Kossi Agassa from Togo, and Moussa Maâzou from Niger.

WAFU B President Kurt Okraku led the accolades, highlighting their invaluable contributions to the sport on the continent.

Known affectionately as ‘Golden Boy,’ Razak showcased his talent with various clubs during the 1970s and 1980s, including the esteemed Asante Kotoko and the New York Cosmos in the North American Soccer League. His illustrious journey also took him to the UAE, Egypt, and Ivory Coast.

In a testament to his legacy, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) recognized him in 2007 as one of Africa’s 30 greatest footballers of the past 50 years.

Dreams FC has denied claims by former Ghana youth international Najeeb Yakubu that the club tried to sign him during his time with the Black Starlets.

Najeeb, who now represents the Niger national team, alleged that Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku excluded him from the Black Meteors squad that travelled to Japan for friendlies in 2021 due to a personal grudge.

Speaking on Prime Take with Muftawu Nabila Abdulai on JoyNews, Najeeb claimed the issue stemmed from his refusal to join Dreams FC.

“I think it’s the GFA President, Kurt [Okraku], who took out my name from the U23 squad that travelled to Japan in 2021 for the friendlies. I think he has a personal problem with me,” he said.

“When I was in the U17, he [Kurt Okraku] wanted me to join his team, Dreams FC. Unfortunately, I couldn’t join his team [and he took it personally].”

However, officials of Dreams FC have categorically denied the allegations.

Speaking to JoySports, a club representative stated that at no point did Kurt Okraku, who was the club’s Executive Chairman at the time, or any other official, attempt to sign Najeeb.

“The only time an official spoke to him was when he was in Ukraine, and the conversation had nothing to do with playing for Dreams FC,” the official said.

“It was about recommending him to the GFA president for consideration in the Black Stars, as the national team was struggling for a right-back at the time.”

Najeeb eventually switched allegiance to Niger and was part of the team that defeated the Black Stars 2-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium during the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

The Black Stars’ poor performance in the qualifiers saw them finish last in Group F with just three points, missing out on the AFCON for the first time in 21 years.

Meanwhile, Najeeb’s Niger placed third with seven points, while Angola and Sudan secured qualification with 14 and eight points, respectively.

Former Ghana youth international, Najeeb Yakubu, has alleged that Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku was behind his exclusion from the Black Meteors squad that travelled to Japan for friendlies in 2021.

Najeeb, who now plays for the Niger national team, was part of the squad that secured a 2-1 win against the Black Stars at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, November 18, 2024.

Speaking on Prime Take with Muftawu Nabila Abdulai on JoyNews, he accused Kurt Okraku of removing his passport from the squad list for the Japan friendlies.

However, officials of Dreams FC have denied ever trying to sign Najeeb when he was with the Black Starlets.

Responding to the allegations, an official told JoySports that at no point did the FA president, who was Executive Chairman of the club, or any other official of Dreams FC contact Najeeb or his representatives to play for the club.

He, however, said the only time an official spoke to him was when he was in Ukraine and the conversation had nothing to do about playing for Dreams. According to him, the said official said he was going to recommend to the GFA president so that the technical team could consider calling him to the Black Stars at the time the national team struggled for a right back.

Najeed eventually switched to Niger, and played against the Black Stars in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

The Black Stars finished last in Group F with only three points, marking the first time in 21 years that the team will miss the continental showpiece.

Meanwhile, Najeeb’s Niger finished third with seven points, while Angola and Sudan secured first and second places with 14 and eight points, respectively.

Former Ghana youth international, Najeeb Yakubu, has accused the Ghana Football Association President, Kurt Okraku of sabotaging his national team career for refusing to sign with his club, Dreams FC.

Najeeb who now plays for the Niger national team, was part of the squad that secured a 2-1 win against the Black Stars at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, November 18, 2024.

But he could have represented Ghana, if not for his strange disappearance from the pool of national team players in 2021.

Yakubu was part of a Black Meteors team that had been selected for a tournament in Japan, but he could not make the trip after officials for the national team decided to leave out his passport from the pile submitted to the Embassy.

Speaking on Prime Take with Muftawu Nabila on Joy News, Yakubu alleged that the passport saga was only possible because his invitation had been rescinded on the orders of the GFA President, Kurt Okraku.

“I think it’s the GFA president Kurt [Okraku who took out my name from the U23 squad that travelled to Japan in 2021 for the friendlies]. I think he has a personal problem with me,” he said.

“When I was in the U-17, he [Kurt Okraku] wanted me to join his team, Dreams Fc. Unfortunately, I couldn’t join his team [and he took it personal].

Najeeb Yakubu first gained national prominence when represented Ghana at the FIFA Under-17 World Youth Championships in 2017. The right back started all five games as Ghana made it to the quarter final stage of the tournament in India.

Since the alleged passport saga, however, the Madina born and bred full back was invited to any of Ghana’s national teams again before he switched nationality in 2022.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou says midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is an “outstanding person” who made a “mistake” with the racial slur made against team-mate Son Heung-min.

The Uruguay international, 27, was banned for seven matches by the Football Association earlier this week, following the comments he made while appearing on Uruguayan television in June.

Spurs have appealed against the ban, saying they accept the guilty finding but not the severity of the punishment.

“I fully support the club’s decision to appeal the severity of the ban,” Postecoglou told Sky Sports, external.

“I spoke to him in the lead-up [to the FA’s decision] and as I said he understands he’s made a mistake and he’s prepared to accept whatever penalty comes his way.

“We as a club are going to support him because the one thing that’s undeniable to me – because I know him – is that he’s an outstanding person, an unbelievable team-mate and a person of the utmost character that’s made a mistake.”

Postecoglou says he accepts the FA’s guilty verdict and that Bentancur will miss a number of matches.

In the media interview in question, asked by a presenter for a Tottenham shirt, Bentancur replied: “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same.”

He later apologised on social media and said his comments were a “very bad joke”.

Bentancur also said sorry to South Korea forward Son, who said his team-mate would “not mean to ever intentionally say something offensive”.

Bentancur, who denied the charge, was fined £100,000 and ordered to undergo a face-to-face education programme.

The ban means Bentancur will miss Premier League matches against Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea among others, as well as a Carabao Cup quarter-final match against Manchester United.

He is available for Europa League matches.

‘Everything a manager could wish for’ – Guardiola signs new deal https://www.myjoyonline.com/everything-a-manager-could-wish-for-guardiola-signs-new-deal/ https://www.myjoyonline.com/everything-a-manager-could-wish-for-guardiola-signs-new-deal/#respond Thu, 21 Nov 2024 21:23:00 +0000 https://www.myjoyonline.com/?p=10032642983 Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says he has "everything a manager could ever wish for" after signing a two-year contract extension to keep him at the club until 2027.]]>

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says he has “everything a manager could ever wish for” after signing a two-year contract extension to keep him at the club until 2027.

The 53-year-old Spaniard joined City in 2016 and has won 18 trophies, including six Premier League titles.

His contract had been due to expire at the end of the current season.

“Manchester City means so much to me,” Guardiola told the club’s website.

“This is my ninth season here. We have experienced so many amazing times together. I have a really special feeling for this football club.

“I have said this many times before, but I have everything a manager could ever wish for, and I appreciate that so much.

“Hopefully now we can add more trophies to the ones we have already won. That will be my focus.”

It was reported that Guardiola had agreed a new contract on Wednesday and the club confirmed the news a day later.

‘Hunger for success remains insatiable’

During his time in Manchester, Guardiola has helped City become just the second English men’s team to win the Treble – the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in the same season.

They have also become the first men’s team to win four successive English top-flight titles and to achieve 100 Premier League points in a single campaign.

“Like every City fan, I am delighted that Pep’s journey with Manchester City will continue, allowing his dedication, passion and innovative thinking to continue to shape the landscape of the game,” City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak added.

“His hunger for improvement and success remains insatiable and the direct beneficiaries of that will continue to be our players and coaching staff, the culture of our club, and the English game at large.”

City are second in this season’s Premier League, five points behind leaders Liverpool, and are on a run of four successive defeats across all competitions.

This is the first time Guardiola has endured such a streak of losses – excluding penalty shootouts – in his managerial career.

The Spaniard’s new contract comes as City await the outcome of a disciplinary case brought by the Premier League over 115 charges for alleged breaches of league’s financial rules, which the club deny but could bring a huge sanction if guilt is established.

Guardiola has continually backed the club and said critics need to wait for the final decision in the case before rushing to condemn.

He is the longest-serving manager in the Premier League, after Jurgen Klopp left Liverpool in the summer.

Analysis – Guardiola’s work not yet done

Simon Stone, Chief football news reporter

This is significant news given indications Guardiola was only going to fully commit to an additional year.

Two seasons will take Guardiola to 11 years at the club, which in the current era of managers lasting a dozen games in some instances, feels like a lifetime.

It is also a show of faith by Guardiola in City, with it the potential for huge penalties if the club lose their disciplinary case over the 115 charges.

As a manager, Guardiola will forever be entwined with that great Barcelona side including Lionel Messi that won two Champions Leagues in three seasons and has gone down as one of the greatest of all time.

His achievements at City will not eclipse those. But by the time he is finished, the best manager of his generation will have spent almost three times longer in Manchester. He currently has 18 trophies with City. Few would bet against that number reaching well into the twenties before his work in the city is done.

Teshie Gonno School came alive with hope and inspiration on Saturday, November 16, 2024, as Football Impact Africa, the organization behind the prestigious Ghana Football Awards, hosted the Ghetto Love Initiative: Teshie Edition.

This transformative event showcased the power of football as a force for unity, education, and positive change.

The Ghetto Love Initiative, one of Football Impact Africa’s flagship programme, aims to uplift communities in Ghana’s urban slums by addressing critical social issues through sports.

In Teshie, the initiative tackled one of the most pressing concerns affecting youth today: substance abuse.

The event featured a workshop organized in collaboration with the National Anti-Doping Committee, Ghana (NADCGh), focusing on the dangers of drug and substance abuse.

Dozens of young footballers attended, eager to learn how to stay disciplined and drug-free while pursuing their dreams of professional football.

Through personal testimonies, expert presentations, and interactive Q&A sessions, participants gained a
deeper understanding of the devastating impact of substance abuse on their health, careers, and communities.

One participant remarked, “Hearing these stories made me realize that staying clean is not just a choice,
but a necessity for my dreams of becoming a professional footballer.”

The event’s impact extended beyond the football pitch with free health screenings provided by Grace Gift Herbal Clinic.

Community members of all ages received checks for malaria, high blood pressure, typhoid, and general wellness. This holistic approach emphasized the organizers’ commitment to building healthy, resilient communities.

The highlight of the day was a thrilling football tournament featuring eight dynamic teams, including
Books for Boots Academy, EAAK, Shinning Babies, Enter Street Football Club, Sambo 4, Turning Point
Soccer Academy, Kingdom FC and Vasajam Football Academy.

The games were filled with passion and talent, culminating in a nail-biting final between Shinning Babies and Sambo 4.

Shinning Babies clinched the championship, with standout players like Evans Kwei (Best Goalkeeper) and
Leslie Ashitey (Best Player) earning well-deserved accolades.

Key stakeholders lauded the initiative for its far-reaching impact. Prince Emekor Azanu, Officer in
Charge of NADCGh commended the workshop for addressing urgent issues.

“This event brought attention to substances we hadn’t even heard of before. If even a handful of these young people take the message to heart, we’ve made a difference.”

Felix Romark, a Board Member of the Ghana Football Awards, emphasized the broader significance.

“This wasn’t just about football; it was about empowering young people to make responsible life choices.”

The Ghetto Love Initiative: Teshie Edition was a resounding success, leaving the community inspired and
hopeful. Football Impact Africa is already planning the next edition, aiming to replicate and expand its
impact across Ghana.

With the support of sponsors like the Ministry of Youth and Sports, NADCGh, and GraceGift Herbal Clinic,
this initiative continues to prove that teamwork, passion, and dedication can change lives—one goal at a
time.

Leicester City manager, Steve Cooper, has confirmed Jordan Ayew could feature in this weekend’s Premier League clash against Chelsea, after suffering an injury on international duty.

Ayew, who scored a superb free-kick for Ghana’s Black Stars against Angola, suffered an injury in that game which ruled him out of Ghana’s final qualifier against Niger.

However, Cooper, in his pre match press conference, confirmed that tests revealed the injury wasn’t as bad as feared.

”It’s not a serious injury contrary to some reports.

“The hope is he may be available for the weekend but we’re a little bit inconclusive on that for the minute,” Cooper said.

Ayew’s international teammate, Abdul Fatawu, was not as lucky, as his injury on international duty has ruled him out for the season.

Ayew has scored twice for Leicester City in the Premier League this season, including a last minute winner, in matchweek 8, away at Southampton.

Leicester City manager, Steve Cooper, has confirmed star winger Fatawu Issahaku will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

Fatawu suffered the injury during the first half of Ghana’s penultimate AFCON qualifier against Angola, and was withdrawn at halftime.

Cooper described the injury as a big blow to the club and the player.

“It’s not good, it’s a serious injury. He’s had an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury that is going to rule him out for the rest of the season,” Cooper lamented.

“It’s a real blow, first and foremost for him, being a young player and having an injury as serious as what an ACL is.

“Albeit, it can be quite common in sport and in particular football, but it’s still a serious injury.

“For it to happen at a young age is a blow for him and a blow for us as well.

“He’s obviously a big talent and a young player, as exciting as he can be at his age, with lots to learn,” said Cooper.

Fatawu was instrumental for the Foxes last season, helping them gain promotion to the Premier League.

“It’s only a pause and we will make sure, as difficult as it is at the moment for him, that he comes back being a stronger player and person, which with the mentality and character that he has, I think will be the case,” Cooper added.

The 20 year old has registered 2 assists in 11 league appearances so for this season for Leicester City.

Former Ghana international Ibrahim Tanko has described Ghana’s failure to qualify for next year’s African Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) as a big blow.

Ghana failed to qualify for the tournament after finishing bottom of Group F with three points.

The four-time African champions also completed the group phase of the qualifying series without a win; a first in the country’s history.

Speaking to Flashscore, Tanko said “tt is very bitter for us (players) and also a big blow for Ghana football because this is the first time in over 20 years that we are not qualifying for the competition,”

“It is not good for us former players as well as the Ghana Football Association. We are definitely going to feel it” he added.

Tanko said he was puzzled by the poor performances, despite Ghana’s very obvious individual quality.

“In terms of players, we have them. For these games (vs Angola & Niger), some players did not come yet we still had a very good squad to compete’’.

The former Black Stars assistant coach is therefore calling for an introspection.

“Qualification for tournaments has always been easy for Ghana except for this one. The GFA needs to sit down and analyze what is happening, there is no tournament that we have not gone past the group stage, but in recent times, we have not come out from the group stage.”

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has dissolved the Management Committee of the Senior National Team (Black Stars) following their failure to qualify for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025.

The Black Stars concluded their AFCON qualification Group F campaign with only three points, finishing last in the group.

In a press release issued on Thursday, November 21, 2024, the GFA expressed regret over the team’s failure to qualify for the continental tournament for the first time in 21 years.

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) wishes to express its sincerest apologies to the good people of Ghana for the Black Stars’ inability to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025. We understand the disappointment and frustration this failure has caused, and we share in the pain and sadness of our beloved fans. We acknowledge that the team’s performance did not meet the high expectations of the nation, and for that, we are truly sorry.”

Ghana’s failure to qualify for next year’s tournament marks a new low, after successive group stage exits at the tournament.

As part of measures to address this decline, the GFA announced the immediate dissolution of the Black Stars’ Management Committee.

“The Executive Council, at its meeting on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, took the following key decisions:
Immediate dissolution of the Management Committee of the senior national football team, the Black Stars.
We sincerely thank the members of the Committee for their service to Ghana Football over the years.”

“The Executive Council will meet the Head Coach of the Black Stars, Mr. Otto Addo, on November 27, 2024, to discuss his technical report on the just-ended AFCON qualifiers and the overall performance of the technical team since he assumed duty earlier this year.”

In response to widespread calls for reforms, the GFA announced plans to organize a retreat to gather ideas on improving the performance of the Black Stars and Ghanaian football as a whole.

Stakeholders such as SWAG, the media, the National Sports Authority, PFAG, former captains and players, coaches, supporters, football enthusiasts, and sports-related professionals (medics, economists, marketers, etc.), as well as opinion leaders (including traditional rulers), will be invited.

The retreat will take place on November 28, 2024, at the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence. Its primary purpose will be to solicit input from stakeholders to develop a roadmap for enhancing the performance of the Black Stars and other national teams.

Vice chairman of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Manifesto Committee, Nana Akomea, has advised the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to maintain Black Stars coach Otto Addo despite calls for his sacking.

Nana Akomeah who speaking on the Super Morning Show of Joy FM, defended Otto Addo, despite his failure to qualify Ghana for next year’s AFCON in Morocco.

“I don’t think we should get into a panic mode yet. I know there is widespread calls for the coach to be relieved of his (duties)”

“Listen, we have the World Cup Qualification ahead of us. I believe we should maintain the coach to take us through the qualification series.”

Otto Addo, who signed a 34-month deal to coach Ghana earlier this year, superintended Ghana’s worst performance in an AFCON qualifying series after finishing bottom of Group F with three points.

The Black Stars also failed to win any of their six matches; a first in the country’s history.

While many have called for his exit, Nana Akomea a high-rankijg member of the governing NPP argued that such reactions have not helped Ghana in the past.

“Any sign of trouble, we change the coach to bring in another coach and then we get into trouble again.”

“So I believe we should maintain the coach to lead us into the qualifiers. If that one too, we end the cycle without qualification, then we can take a decision.”

Meanwhile, the GFA will take a decision on Otto Addo’s future on November 27, 2024, after a stalemate on Wednesday’s review meeting.

At its meeting on Wednesday, the Executive Council could not agree on whether or not to sack the coach.

The GFA, in a circular on Thursday, has also announced the dissolution of the Black Stars management committee.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is expected to render an unqualified apology to Ghanaians for the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for AFCON 2025, JoySports has gathered.

The Executive Council of the football governing body, at its meeting on Wednesday, took responsibility for the team’s failure and resolved to communicate publicly with Ghanaians.

They are expected to announce the dissolution of the Black Stars management Committee in a statement on Thursday.

The Management Committee, led by Mark Addo, with Akwesi Agyeman as Vice Chairman was dissolved a few weeks ago, but three people were asked to act.

Mark Addo, Kwame Ofosu Bamfo, and Akwesi Agyeman were asked to act, but it appears it was a smokescreen because they were not present in most of the qualifying matches.

Randy Abbey acted as leader of delegation in some of the trips the Black Stars made, but he was not introduced to the technical team or playing body as Management Committee member.

Ghana failed to qualify for the AFCON for the first time in 21 years, finishing bottom of Group F, which included Niger, Sudan, and Angola.

The four-time AFCON champions, having participated in every tournament since 2006, were unsuccessful in their attempt this time.

The team has been dismal over the last five years, exiting at the group stage in the last two AFCON tournaments. The FA says Ghanaians deserve better and will apologise for the latest failure.

The Executive Council (ExCo) of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) failed to reach a conclusive decision regarding the future of the Black Stars’ technical team, led by Otto Addo, in their meeting on Wednesday, JoySports can report.

This follows Ghana’s failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in 21 years, a development that has stirred nationwide disappointment.

Under Otto Addo’s stewardship, Ghana did not win a single match in their six AFCON qualifying games, losing three and drawing three, ultimately finishing bottom of Group F, which included Niger, war-torn Sudan, and Angola. Despite these results, the debate over Otto Addo’s future as head coach remains contentious.

During the meeting, the GFA Executive Council was split. One faction advocated for the immediate dissolution of the technical team, citing their failure to meet performance indicators. The opposing faction argued for Otto Addo’s retention, highlighting financial constraints.

The FA still owes severance packages to former coaches CK Akonnor and Chris Hughton, and having recently paid Milovan Rajevac’s outstanding dues, they contend that parting ways with Addo would only exacerbate their financial strain.

The council ultimately deferred its decision, asking Otto Addo to present his technical report at their next meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, 27 November at 11 am.

This report is expected to provide a detailed defence of his tenure and justify why he should remain in charge, particularly given he was granted full autonomy to select his backroom staff.

They FA, however, appointed former Ghana right-back, John Painstsil as his assistant and Fatawu Dauda as his goalkeepers trainer. The rest of the backroom staff including masseurs and two videos analysts were appointed by Otto.

Those supporting Otto Addo’s continuation emphasised the importance of stability within the technical team.

They argue that constant managerial changes have been detrimental to Ghana’s footballing fortunes.

JoySports understands that the technical team could be reconstituted after the next week’s meeting.

Initially, the FA planned to meet with Otto Addo on Wednesday evening following their deliberations, but the late conclusion of their meeting made this impractical.

With no end in sight to the civil war in Sudan, the country’s footballers have offered a glimmer of hope to their compatriots thanks to their unlikely qualification for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

The conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces militia began in April last year and has forced over 11 million people from their homes.

Aid workers say it has created the world’s worst humanitarian crisis – with the leading cause of death across the country being preventable disease and starvation.

Yet despite that backdrop, coupled with being forced to play their home ties outside of Sudan and the suspension of the domestic league, the Falcons of Jediane will represent their nation at the 2025 Afcon in Morocco.

“It’s something that’s consistently in our minds. Our families are still affected by the war,” forward Abobakar Eisa told Newsday on the BBC World Service.

“The manager always says: ‘When you’re putting on the shirt, you don’t just do it for your family and yourselves. You do it for everyone else’s family, and everyone in Sudan – for your whole country – to lift their spirits up.’

“We’re doing that through football, which is a beautiful thing. We know we’re playing for a much bigger cause.”

A draft United Nations Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in Sudan has been vetoed by Russia – a move which British foreign secretary David Lammy described as a “disgrace”.

Meanwhile, a recent study says the number of people killed since the conflict started is significantly higher than previously reported, with United States special envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello saying some estimates suggested up to 150,000 people had been killed.

“[My] family had to migrate to Egypt because you could walk out in the street and there’d be gunshots, or there’d be gunshots flying through windows or walls,” Eisa said.

“It’s very, very dangerous. We’re hoping it gets settled quickly, so people can find peace.

“It’s painful to speak about these things, but you have to think that things are going to get better.”

Upsetting the odds – and Ghana

Sudan have been well supported in their ‘home’ games in the 2025 Afcon campaign

Sudan, ranked 110th in the world, was the third seed in their group when the 2025 Afcon qualifying draw was made in July.

However, taking four points from a double-header against four-time Nations Cup winners Ghana last month put the team, which is coached by former Black Stars player and manager Kwesi Appiah, a point away from reaching the finals.

Appiah’s side fell to a damaging 4-0 defeat away against Niger last week, but Eisa said the squad remained positive heading into their final game against already-qualified Angola on Monday.

“The Niger game took us by surprise,” the 28-year-old, who plays his club football in Thailand, explained.

“On the way home, we said to ourselves we’re more than capable. We knew we had pressure, but at the same time we knew we could get the job done.”

Sudan ground out a 0-0 draw in Benghazi, at their makeshift home stadium, to seal second spot in Group F.

Eisa said the side has fed off the support of the Sudanese diaspora in their two qualifiers hosted in Libya – as well as local supporters – after starting their campaign in South Sudan.

'Bigger cause' of civil war drives Sudan's Afcon dream

“We’ve had a really big following,” he added.

“Obviously it’s not home, it’s not Sudan, but at the same time, it does feel like that with the support that they show and bring to us.

“[Against Angola it] was very loud. We couldn’t hear ourselves.”

Taking on the continent

The delayed 2021 Afcon was Sudan’s most recent outing at the continental showpiece, a campaign that ended in the group stage.

“As a kid, you grow up watching the Africa Cup of Nations,” said Eisa, who was not involved last time around.

“To actually be a part of history, and with what’s going on in Sudan, is an amazing feeling.”

Next year’s finals in Morocco will not kick off until 21 December, a delay which Eisa described as “annoying” given the mood amongst the squad.

Yet, despite their handicaps, Sudan are also performing admirably in preliminaries for the 2026 Fifa World Cup.

They sit top of Group B, ahead of 2021 Afcon winners Senegal and two-time continental champions DR Congo, with the group winners assured of a place at the tournament in Canada, Mexico and the USA.

The Teranga Lions are scheduled to travel to face Sudan in March’s international window.

“Our attention quickly goes to that game,” Eisa said.

“It’s like we’ve actually got no time to think about the Afcon at this moment. Senegal are probably the favourites of the group, so we need to show what we’re about.”

With the Nations Cup to look forward to, booking a first-ever World Cup appearance would be all the more remarkable given Sudan’s circumstances – and bring some much needed pride to a nation riven by war.

Former Hearts of Oak coach Kim Grant has described the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as a “reflection of systematic incompetence.”

Grant’s statement follows Ghana’s poor showing in the AFCON qualification series.

The Black Stars failed to qualify for the continental showpiece for the first time in 21 years, finishing button in Group-F with only three points.

In a Facebook post, he said the “Black Stars’ failure to qualify for AFCON 2025 as a devastating reflection of systemic incompetence, a lack of accountability, and an ongoing disregard for the basics of football management.”

He attributed the team’s decline to persistent issues, including poor scouting, political interference, and substandard recruitment, despite access to a global pool of talented players.

“Tactical decisions highlight a glaring lack of experience, with an inability to implement a coherent playing system that suits the players’ strengths. Instead, we see square pegs forced into round holes, wasting talent and failing to maximise potential on the pitch.” He stated.

“Adding to this mess is the arrogance of some players who believe their status in Europe’s top leagues makes them above African football. They fail to understand that the dynamics of playing for the national team are entirely different. The quality of teammates at their clubs does not translate to the national stage, and their inability—or unwillingness—to adapt only deepens the crisis. This egotistical mindset is a betrayal of the jersey and the nation.”

Grant further emphasized the need for urgent reforms within Ghana football, specifically calling for a change in leadership at the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

“Ghana football needs leadership with integrity, tactical expertise, and a commitment to excellence. The excuses must end, and the work to restore the Black Stars’ pride must begin now,” he asserted.

The Prague Raptors F.C. coach’s comments come at a time when the executive committee of the Ghana Football Association will hold a meeting on Wednesday to deliberate on Ghana’s poor AFCON failure.

Prague Raptors F.C coach Kim Grant has called for the sacking of Black Stars coach Otto Addo.

He made the comments after Ghana failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) in Morocco.

In a Facebook post, the former Black Stars player said Otto Addo’s ”Tactical decisions highlight a glaring lack of experience, with an inability to implement a coherent playing system that suits the players’ strengths. Instead, we see square pegs forced into round holes, wasting talent, and failing to maximize potential on the pitch.”

Ghana failed to qualify for the tournament, a first in twenty years, after finishing bottom of Group F with three points.

Less fancied Angola and war-torn Sudan, secured qualification spots ahead of the four-time African champions.

Grant, who currently coaches at the non-league Czech side, also alleged that Addo is being protected by powerful figures in the Ghana Football Association.

”Coaches in the past were dismissed for far less, yet this current technical staff is being shielded by an inner circle, even after this disastrous AFCON qualification campaign. The narrative to retain them for the World Cup qualifiers is outrageous and risks further embarrassment. It’s time to stop protecting mediocrity, banish egos, and demand accountability.”

Grant’s comments coincide with the Executive Council’s meeting on Wednesday, to deliberate on Ghana’s dismal qualifying campaign.

Although no official decision has been communicated, it is understood that Otto Addo will not be fired.

Former France international Patrick Vieira has been appointed as the new head coach of Serie A club Genoa.

Patrick Vieira will sign his contract as new Genoa manager on Wednesday until June 2026 with an option for a further season following an announcement by the club.

The former Crystal Palace and Strasbourg manager, succeeds ex-Italy striker Alberto Gilardino, who had been in charge since December 2022.

“Genoa CFC announces that Patrick Vieira has been entrusted with the technical management of the first team,” the club said in a statement.

“The new coach will direct the first training session this afternoon after the formalisation of the contract at the Villa Rostan headquarters.”

Genoa sit 17th in the table, just one point above the relegation zone, with only two wins from twelve matches this season.

Vieira started his managerial career at Manchester City, taking charge of their Premier League Two side, before assuming his first senior post as head coach with Major League Soccer side New York City FC in January 2016.

His management career has taken him to New York City, Nice, Crystal Palace and his last job at Strasbourg which he left “by mutual agreement” in July.

Meanwhile, a recent study says the number of people killed since the conflict started is significantly higher than previously reported with United States special envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello saying some estimates suggested up to 150,000 people had been killed.

Sudan supporters breaking flags in the stands of a stadium in Benghazi Libya

Sudan have been well supported in their ‘home’ games in the 2025 Afcon campaign

Sudan, ranked 110th in the world, were third seeds in their group when the 2025 Afcon qualifying draw was made in July.

Sudan ground out a 0-0 draw in Benghazi at their makeshift home stadium, to seal second spot in Group F.

Eisa said the side have fed off the support of the Sudanese diaspora in their two qualifiers hosted in Libya – as well as local supporters – after starting their campaign in South Sudan.

“We’ve had a really big following,” he added.

“Obviously it’s not home, it’s not Sudan, but at the same time it does feel like that with the support that they show and bring to us.

“[Against Angola it] was very loud. We couldn’t hear ourselves.”

Taking on the continent

The delayed 2021 Afcon was Sudan’s most recent outing at the continental showpiece, a campaign that ended in the group stage.

“As a kid, you grow up watching Africa Cup of Nations,” said Eisa, who was not involved last time around.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has presented buses to nine clubs in fulfilment of its promise to support clubs.

Teams from the Ghana Premier League and Division One League were the recipients in the presentation ceremony held on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Young Apostles, Okwahu United, New Edubiase United, Basake Holy Stars, and Vision FC, among others, received the buses.

The initiative aims to improve clubs’ transportation logistics, thereby enhancing their operational efficiency and competitiveness.

Founder of Vision FC, Mr. George Aforklenyuie, believes it will go a long way to curb the club’s transportation crisis during match days.

“It will be a long way to help our course; the current bus we have here, though it looks new but has a bit of fault, last time we were on our way to Brong Ahafo, I understand that our bus broke down three times on the way,” he told JoySports.

“This one has come to solve that problem, and in fact we lost that much, terrible if you remember the score line of 3 goals to nil.”

“It’s all because of the journey, the routes, and the bus we used. This time around, I can assure you, with this bus, we are not going to record that abysmal anymore.”

Today’s ceremony begins the fulfilment of a promise made to clubs across the first three tiers of Ghana Football.

Nine months ago, GFA President Kurt Okraku said “the strategy is to invest in thirty buses for clubs in the three tier Leagues of Ghana to enhance performance and growth of the domestic game.”

The GFA is yet to distribute the rest of the buses as they remain at the Tema Harbour, awaiting clearance.

Ghana’s senior women’s national football team, the Black Queens, will learn their group opponents for the upcoming 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), with the draw set for Friday, November 22.

The event will take place at the Mohammed VI Technical Centre in Sale, Morocco, where the tournament will be hosted next year.

The Black Queens qualified for the Women’s AFCON under the guidance of Nora Hauptle after missing out on the 2022 edition, with the 2020 tournament having been cancelled.

Ghana will compete against 11 other nations, including host Morocco, reigning champions South Africa, and notable teams like Nigeria, Algeria, Senegal, and Zambia.

Each nation will vie for the prestigious trophy as they prepare for the tournament.

The 2024 Women’s AFCON marks the 15th edition of the tournament and will take place between July 5 and July 26, 2025.

Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston believes the time is not right to relieve Black Stars head coach Otto Addo of his duties.

Calls have intensified for the former Dortmund assistant coach to resign or be sacked after he failed to qualify Ghana for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in 21 years.

The Black Stars finished bottom of Group F without winning a single game and lost at home to Angola and Niger.

Despite the team’s fortunes hitting an all-time low, Laryea Kingston argues that Addo should be retained to oversee the remaining 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

“If we change the coach and the technical team and bring in new faces, it will be a disaster,” Kingston told Flashscore.

“I think we should allow him to at least finish the World Cup qualifiers. Who knows? Maybe he can qualify. After that, we can make a decision as a country. So, we should give him another opportunity.”

In his five years as president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku has worked with four coaches, with Otto Addo returning for a second stint.

The Executive Council of the GFA will meet on Wednesday to discuss the team’s struggles.

The president of Senegal’s football federation (FSF) was “very sad” to see Africa Cup of Nations-winning coach Aliou Cisse leave his role last month following a directive from the country’s sports ministry.

Cisse, who led the West Africans to a first-ever Nations Cup (Afcon) title in February 2022, was let go after nearly a decade in charge – with the FSF and sports ministry, which pays the national coach’s salary, at odds over the decision.

During his tenure, Senegal were also runners-up at the 2019 Afcon and reached two Fifa World Cups, and the 48-year-old had not lost a competitive match, other than on penalties, since the start of last year.

“Before he arrived we had never won a continental trophy,” FSF chief Augustin Senghor told BBC Sport Africa.

“This was enormous for us. For this reason, I think it was good to let him finish his job, because Senegal is in a phase of transition.

“He went because of a decision by government. We respect it because we respect the authority.”

Although Cisse’s contract had expired in August, he stayed on for September’s opening 2025 Afcon qualifiers, picking up four points from two games, and was expecting to receive a 12-month extension to his deal.

“He was surprised, but the message he gave was that he did not want to create a difficult crisis,” Senghor explained.

“He’s very committed to his country. He said: ‘President, I will support Senegalese football, because I am a son of this country’.”

Overseeing change

Senghor had wanted Cisse to finish the shortest Afcon qualifying campaign in a decade, with all six fixtures completed in the space of three months.

“The generation of Sadio Mane, Idrissa Gana Gueye, Kalidou Koulibaly and others have maybe one or two years to play, and perhaps one more World Cup,” Senghor said.

“After that, we have the new generation – Lamine Camara, Pape Matar Sarr, Habib Diarra and all the players who were in our youth teams.

“We’ve been working on it for a long time and Aliou was one of the key men in this plan.

“We think it would have been better if he stayed for one more year to finalise the transition and leave with honour.”

However, Senghor believes Cisse is young enough to return to the job in future.

Avoiding conflict

A large crowd, wit several waving Senegalese flags, crowd around a bus carrying the national squad as several players sit on top of the vehicle and Aliou Cisse stands aloft wearing a yellow t-shirt and holding the Africa Cup of Nations trophy
Senegal’s triumph at the 2021 Afcon prompted scenes of jubilation on the squad’s return to Dakar

Cisse’s lengthy tenure – a rarity on the continent – coincided with Senegal’s most sustained period of success as they spent four years as Africa’s top-ranked side.

Prior to his appointment in March 2015, the national team had reached one Afcon final and one World Cup – with both of those appearances coming in 2002 when Cisse captained the side.

Their improved fortunes kick-started a run that saw the Teranga Lions conquer the continent at Under-20 and Under-17 level, as well as in the African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The axe came quickly when it fell, with Cisse dismissed just two days before a planned squad announcement.

Cisse exit 'very sad' for Senegal football president

An FSF statement said he had failed to reach his objectives, namely: winning this year’s Afcon and reaching the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup (where they lost to England in the last 16), slipping down the world rankings (Senegal are 20th, three places below their record high) and, crucially, “the risk of disaffection between our national team and the Senegalese in general”.

Criticism of Cisse’s tactics had increased after their 2023 Afcon exit – sparking the ministry’s move in what many saw as a populist act.

“The agenda of the government is not the same as the agenda of football,” Senghor said.

“They decided and, unfortunately, we could not oppose it. If we want to continue, we need to do so in a framework of stability.”

Senghor added that conflict between the FSF and the government is “not fruitful”.

New Senegal boss expected before March

Pape Thiaw, wearing a purple Senegal tracksuit top, points with his right arm from the touchline at a football match
Pape Thiaw was placed in charge for Senegal’s final four Afcon 2025 qualifiers

Pape Thiaw, previously Cisse’s assistant and also the coach who led Senegal to their CHAN triumph last year, has completed the Afcon 2025 qualifying campaign.

“We said ‘We’ll do Aliou without Aliou – he’s not here, but he’s here. Every time you are on the bench, think that Aliou is with you’,” explained Senghor.

Two victories over Malawi secured qualification from Group L with two games to spare.

There are four months until the next international break in March, when Senegal will resume their bid to reach the 2026 World Cup.

“We have three or four months to go slowly, smartly and make the right choice,” said Senghor, who expects to appoint a new coach before those games.

Targeting World Cup progress

It is probable the FSF will look internally, continuing a vision that Senghor has instilled since taking charge in 2009.

“Nowadays, all our coaches are from our country and we don’t have any reason to change,” he said.

“When you want to build something in your nation, you have to first begin by building the coaches and their skills.

“It is working. Now is not the moment to change the philosophy.”

Whoever gets the job will have to accept some lofty targets.

They hope to not only surpass their historic World Cup quarter-final appearance in 2002 but also Morocco’s run at Qatar 2022, when the Atlas Lions became the first African side to reach the semi-finals.

“Qualifying for the Nations Cup is not an event for us now,” ventured Senghor.

“Now our target is to go to the World Cup every four years and to improve in the World Cup, maybe go further than Morocco – to the final.

“Why not? We have the potential.”

Tanzania upset Guinea to reach the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations before Botswana and Mozambique became the last two teams to qualify for next year’s tournament.

Guinea had needed to avoid defeat in their trip to Dar Es Salaam to finish second in Group H, while the East Africans knew victory would book a place in Morocco.

Mady Camara rattled the Tanzania bar before the break and the Taifa Stars eventually ran out 1-0 winners after Simon Msuva headed in from just inside the six-yard box in the 61st minute.

Tanzania, who will co-host the 2027 Afcon alongside Kenya and Uganda, are ranked 34 places below Guinea in the world.

Meanwhile, Botswana will feature at the finals for just the second time after picking up the point they needed away against Egypt to finish second in Group C.

Omaatla Kebatho gave the Zebras an early lead in Cairo after sloppy defending from the hosts, but Trezeguet quickly equalised for the Pharaohs.

Botswana held on to draw 1-1 and finish a point above Mauritania, who rounded off their campaign with a 1-0 home victory over 10-man Cape Verde.

The southern Africans, who were the lowest seeds in their group, lost all three group games on their sole previous Afcon finals outing in 2012.

Similar to Guinea, Mozambique knew a point from their trip to Guinea-Bissau would be enough to progress from Group I, while the West Africans needed all three points.

The visitors went ahead in the ninth minute through Bruno Langa, but Everton striker Beto levelled three minutes before half-time.

Stanley Ratifo restored the advantage for the Mambas in the 52nd minute, and Mozambique closed out the game to secure back-to-back qualifications.

Africa’s biggest sporting event will begin on 21 December next year and run until 18 January 2026.

The Confederation of African Football is yet to announce the date of the group draw for the finals.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has agreed a one-year contract extension.

Although City are refusing to comment on a story that was first reported in the Athletic, multiple sources have confirmed Guardiola has elected to sign a new deal to take his stay at the club to 10 years.

The 53-year-old joined City in 2016 and has won 18 trophies so far, including six Premier League titles.

His contract had been due to expire at the end of the current season. There have been suggestions the new agreement will have the option of a second year, although this is not known at this stage.

During his time in Manchester, Guardiola has seen City become just the second English men’s team to win the Treble – the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in the same season.

They have also become the first team to win four successive English top-flight titles and to achieve 100 Premier League points.

City sit second in this season’s Premier League, five points behind leaders Liverpool, and are on a run of four successive defeats across all competitions.

That is the first time Guardiola has been on such a dismal streak – excluding shootouts – in his career.

After the most recent of those losses, a 2-1 defeat at Brighton, he said: “Maybe after seven years winning six Premier Leagues, maybe one year another team deserve it.”

Guardiola has previously signed extensions in May 2018, November 2020 and November 2022.

Speaking in May after City’s historic fourth successive league title, Guardiola said he was “closer to leaving than staying”.

Guardiola then said “part of me is leaving” when director of football Txiki Begiristain announced in October that he – a long-time ally – would be leaving City at the end of the season.

Former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss Guardiola said he wanted to be “really convinced” that any extension “is the best for the club”.

The uncertainty over Guardiola’s future has been cited by some as a reason for the club’s poor form.

There is also no timescale for the outcome of the disciplinary case brought by the Premier League for the 115 charges against City, which the club deny but could bring a huge sanction if guilt was established. Guardiola has continually backed the club and said critics need to wait for the final decision in the case before rushing to condemn the club.

He is the longest-serving manager in the Premier League after Jurgen Klopp left Liverpool in the summer.

Cameroon solidified their dominance in Group J of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with a 2-1 victory over Zimbabwe at the Stade Omnisport Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaoundé on Tuesday.

The result ensured the Indomitable Lions finished unbeaten at the top of the group with 14 points, while Zimbabwe, despite the loss, maintained second place with nine points and also booked their spot in the tournament.

First-Half Brilliance from Cameroon

Cameroon got off to a flying start with two goals in the first 23 minutes, putting Zimbabwe under immense pressure.

Captain Vincent Aboubakar opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a powerful strike into the top corner after a well-timed assist from Georges-Kévin N’Koudou.

N’Koudou then doubled the lead five minutes later, slotting the ball into the bottom corner following a swift counterattack led by Christian Bassogog.

Cameroon’s attacking intent and fluidity in the first half left Zimbabwe struggling to keep pace.

Despite the loss, Zimbabwe’s earlier performances ensured they clinched the second qualification spot, marking a return to Africa’s premier tournament.

Zimbabwe’s Fightback Falls Short

Terrence Dzvukamanja pulled one back for Zimbabwe in the 73rd minute with a stunning left-footed effort from outside the box.

However, the Warriors failed to find an equaliser despite some late chances, including a shot that rattled the post in the 81st minute.

Cameroon’s defence held firm in the closing stages, with goalkeeper André Onana making crucial saves to deny Zimbabwe’s late surge.

The result confirmed Kenya’s third-place finish with six points, while Namibia ended at the bottom with two points.

Namibia failed to secure a single win, finishing at the bottom with two points and scoring just two goals in six matches.

Tanzania has secured a place at next year’s AFCON in Morocco, following a 1-0 win over Guinea.

Simon Msuva scored the decisive goal with a header, midway through the second half at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s win ensures the Taifa Stars finish second in Group H with 10 points, taking them beyond the reach of third-placed Guinea or bottom-placed Ethiopia in the standings.

Guinea’s Hopes Dashed

Guinea went into the game on the back of three consecutive wins but struggled to breach a miserly Tanzanian rear guard.

Tuesday’s defeat effectively ends Guinea’s hopes of qualification as they finish third with nine points.

Tanzania will now make it to a second successive AFCON tournament, and a fourth in the country’s history.

Group H Standings (Finalized for Tanzania):

 1. DR Congo – 12 points (5 matches played)
 2. Tanzania – 10 points (6 matches played, qualified)
 3. Guinea – 9 points (6 matches played)
 4. Ethiopia – 1 point (5 matches played)

Black Stars team manager, Ameenu Shardow has admitted they have disappointed the country by failing to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco next year.

Ghana finished at the bottom of the Group F having failed to register a single victory after six matches.

The four-time African champions ended the qualifiers with a 2-1 home loss to Niger; a result that ended Ghana’s sixteen-year unbeaten streak in Accra.

Reflecting on the outcome, Shardow said “we have let Ghanaians down by failing to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON),” in an interview with Accra-based radio station, Happy FM.

Having made a semi-final at each AFCON tournament from 2008 to 2017, Ghana will now have to watch the tournament from home, for the first time since 2004.

Meanwhile, the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association will meet on Wednesday to review Ghana’s dismal showing in the qualifiers.

While head coach Otto Addo’s performance will be reviewed, there are no indications that he will be sacked.

Ghana head coach, Otto Addo, has mounted a strong defense of his commitment to the country after overseeing the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Germany-born former Ghana international has come under intense scrutiny after setting an unwanted record by failing to qualify for the AFCON for the first time in 21 years.

Many have called for him to resign, but he has insisted that stepping down is not an option for him at this point in time.

Others have consistently pointed to his refusal to accept the job on a full-time basis after the 2022 World Cup as evidence of his lack of commitment to Ghana.

However, the former Dortmund assistant coach has rejected these claims, saying he has always chosen Ghana over his country of birth.

“I don’t even want to go home because when I go home, I will see them [his family] crying,” Otto Addo said after Ghana’s 2-1 defeat to Niger on Monday in Accra.

“They are very, very sad, and I will be sad as well. I’m also sad. I’m very sad. I’m very sad that Ghanaians are sad. It touches me. It touches me very much.

“There’s a different understanding. I don’t think you (journalist) will get it because I was born in Germany. For me, coming down here is always with the heart, always.

“You know, there are some others even choosing to switch nationalities for a different country.

“I never had this in my heart, never. I always want to play for Ghana, and I always want to represent Ghana. Always.”

Ghana finished bottom of Group F with three points, 11 behind Angola and five adrift of second-placed Sudan.

Niger Coach, Badou Zaki has discloses that the bulk of his team that defeated Ghana in Accra, is made of amateurs.

Niger beat Ghana 2-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, November 18, 2024, to claim all three points in their final Group – F African Cup of Nations qualifier.

Speaking after the match, Badou underscored the threat Ghana posed, however, anticipated a victory for his side after thrashing Sudan 4-0.

“We knew that the Ghanaian team could score, but they also conceded goals. From our last AFCON experience, we understood this, and after our 4-0 win over Sudan, we believed that beating Ghana was possible,” he said.

He further highlighted the challenges his team faced which could have curtailed their chances of winning the match.

“Most of my players are amateurs, and those based outside of Niger had to travel for up to eighteen hours before arriving just a day before the game,” Zaki explained.

The defeat means Ghana finished last in Group F with three points. The team will miss the continental showpiece for the first time in 21 years.

Manchester United released a seven-minute video on Monday to mark Ruben Amorim’s first training session as the club’s head coach.

Players including Casemiro and Marcus Rashford put out positive posts on their social media accounts to state how well it had gone.

The editing of a session that would normally last more than an hour gave a few small clues about Amorim’s thinking before his first match in charge at Ipswich on Sunday.

There was also a bit of fitness news – and a definite subtle message to try to suggest issues from Erik ten Hag’s tenure are now being addressed.

Who was there?

Leny Yoro gestures to the camera

Leny Yoro, 19, has been out for three months with a foot injury

England duo Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo, and new signing Leny Yoro, were all involved as they step up their recovery from recent injuries.

Shaw has not featured for United since February, Mainoo’s last game was at Aston Villa on 6 October and Yoro is still to make his debut since his £52m move from Lille in the summer.

Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof were not shown playing any part. All missed international duty this month through injury.

Andre Onana, Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui, Matthijs de Ligt, Manuel Ugarte, Christian Eriksen, Bruno Fernandes, Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee were all absent on international duty.

Formation & back three?

Much of the debate around Amorim’s appointment has centered around his tactics and how he preferred to operate with three central defenders and two wing-backs at Sporting, an alien concept at United going back to Sir Alex Ferguson’s time.

Amorim said in in his interview with club media on Friday fans would see “an idea” at Portman Road this weekend. Judging by this footage, a back three will be part of that.

Jonny Evans was flanked by Yoro to his right and Shaw to the left. Antony was the right wing-back, Tyrell Malacia the left wing-back.

Casemiro and Mainoo filled the deeper midfield slots, with Mason Mount – who applied a first-time finish to an Antony cross – Amad Diallo and Rashford in the forward roles.

‘Speed it up’ – Recovery sprints & intensity

One of the major criticisms of recent United incarnations, going back long before Ten Hag’s time, is a lack of work-rate, particularly when it comes to tracking back.

United are not saying who signed off the video edit but it seems fairly clear some thought has gone into what was released.

In possession and attacking, four times, players were shown chasing back hard after Amorim had given the signal for a lost ball and a counter-attack.

It was repeated so often in such a short space of time, it was as though someone at Old Trafford wanted it to be known Amorim is trying to address United’s issues in transition.

Amad Diallo smiles while holding a football

Amad Diallo at Monday’s training session – Ruben Amorim’s first as head coach

Mainoo positioning

In the summer, Mainoo was one of three players – Hojlund and Garnacho being the others – who were ring-fenced as United made it clear they were willing to listen to offers for virtually all their first-team squad.

As a local boy and academy graduate, Mainoo, 19, is the pin-up boy for how the club wants to be represented.

So, while it is safe to assume Amorim singled out more than one player for a spot of impromptu coaching, the discussion with Mainoo was the one that made it into the public domain.

Amorim showed Mainoo what he wanted from him in terms of body shape and positioning – and what different options he could have by moving just a short distance.

Head coach not manager

It is worth remembering Amorim has been appointed as head coach, not a manager, as Ten Hag had been.

It is Amorim who is guiding players through the patterns he wants to establish.

There were smiles alongside the messages in the edit of Amorim on Monday.

The nearest we saw to ferocity was his demand to “not lose the ball” seconds before intervening to tell Evans they had lost possession and needed to regain their position.

It was insightful to a point. But it was also the picture United wanted the world to see.

Board chairman of the National Sports Authority, Seth Panwum has called for the immediate sacking of Ghana coach Otto Addo.

He made the comments in the wake of Ghana’s 2-1 loss to Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday.

While Monday’s defeat, a first at the Accra Sports Stadium in sixteen years was disappointing, Ghana’s failure to qualify for next year’s tournament was the bigger issue.

Speaking to Angel FM, Seth Panwum said “Otto Addo must be sacked because he was given a performance contract and he has failed to perform.”

Monday’s defeat means for the first time in the country’s history, Ghana had completed an AFCON qualifying series without a win.

The four-time AFCON winners finished bottom of Group F with just three points.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association’s Executive Council will review the team’s dismal performance in the qualifiers on Wednesday.

There are no indications that Otto Addo will be sacked at Wednesday’s meeting.

A former GFA Spokesperson and CAF Media Officer, Ibrahim Saanie Daara, has cautioned against impulsive decisions to sack Black Stars’ head coach and GFA leadership following Ghana’s failure to qualify for AFCON 2025.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on November 18, he called for a thoughtful evaluation of the team’s shortcomings rather than knee-jerk reactions.

“I want to warn against a trigger-happy approach,” Saanie Daara emphasised.

“When issues like this happen, we are often too eager to say, ‘Sack this person or that person.’ But it’s more prudent to take a considered approach, assess what went wrong, and then make informed decisions.”

While he acknowledged that both the coach and GFA leadership bear responsibility, Saanie Daara urged against wholesale changes without first analysing the root causes.

“We need to look at what went wrong during the qualifiers. Was it the coaching? The management? The players? Only after a thorough analysis can we determine the best course of action,” he explained.

Saanie Daara also highlighted the importance of stability, drawing on Ghana’s ability to bounce back in the past.

“Remember, we came from a point where we couldn’t even perform well at AFCON, and yet, we qualified for the 2022 World Cup. That showed promise,” he said.

On the topic of retaining coach Chris Hughton, Saanie Daara was optimistic about continuity.

“For me, I’d keep him,” he said, citing the team’s competitive displays during the 2022 World Cup qualifiers and group-stage matches in Qatar.

“We showed progress then, and I believe with the right adjustments, we can get back on track.”

However, he didn’t absolve GFA leadership of its share of the blame.

“The silence from the Executive Committee during these trying times is deafening. They must also take responsibility and step up their game,” Saanie Daara stated.

Ultimately, Daara believes Ghana needs to balance accountability with measured decision-making.

“Radical changes might be necessary, but they must not destroy what has already been built. Fix what is broken, but don’t tear everything down,” he concluded.

A seasoned sports journalist, Veronica Commey, has called for the resignation of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kurt Okraku, following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for AFCON 2025.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on November 18, Commey minced no words in attributing the national team’s recent struggles to poor leadership at the GFA.

“What GFA President Kurt Okraku should be doing is taking responsibility for the fact that he has supervised the worst-ever spell for Ghana in five years,” she stated emphatically.

This year’s AFCON qualification failure marks the first time since 2004 that Ghana’s national team has missed the tournament.

For Ms Commey, this is part of a worrying pattern under Okraku’s tenure, which she described as Ghana’s worst era in football.

“Back-to-back exits at the Nations Cup in the first round and now failing to qualify. In any serious country, heads must roll,” she argued, stressing the need for accountability at the highest level of Ghana football.

Ms Commey was critical of Okraku’s reluctance to acknowledge his role in the team’s decline.

“People must have the integrity or the standard to say, ‘I had ideas, I wanted to do well, and now that we do not qualify, it is important that I step aside because perhaps my ideas are no longer working,’” she said.

She also took issue with Okraku’s characterisation of Ghana’s qualification for the 2022 World Cup as the pinnacle of his achievements.

“I disagree with his view that qualifying for Qatar was the height of heights. In 2010, we were almost semi-finalists at the World Cup. So it cannot be the height of heights,” she remarked.

Ms Commey pointed out the stark contrast between the GFA’s celebratory tone during successes and its lack of responsibility during failures.

“When you qualified the nation for the Nations Cup and the World Cup, you were gloating all over the place and taking the credit. You have failed. You must do the same,” she stated.

Despite her scathing critique, Ms Commey expressed doubt that Kurt Okraku would step down willingly.

“Would he have the courage and the standard to know that, having disappointed the nation so much, he should step down? I can’t really imagine it happening, because if I look at the tone of his post, it tells me he feels he should be around,” she observed.

The journalist dismissed any excuses tied to the challenges of transitioning from the normalization committee era, stating bluntly: “It’s been five years, and you cannot say that post-normalization is still well underway. It is not.”

Ms Commey’s impassioned plea underscores the urgency for reforms in Ghana football leadership. Her message is clear: accountability and change are necessary to revive the Black Stars’ fortunes.

“This is Ghana’s worst spell in football, and those in charge must own up and step aside for the sake of the nation,” she concluded.

A former GFA Spokesperson and CAF Media Officer, Ibrahim Saanie Daara, has described the Black Stars’ AFCON 2025 qualification campaign as lacklustre and disorganised.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on November 18, he dissected the team’s failings, pointing out that the entire football ecosystem—from players to management—failed to deliver.

“Our campaign was wishy-washy,” the former BBC sports presenter stated bluntly.

“At a time when other teams were well-prepared, we were juggling issues like where to play our matches, the state of our pitches, and dealing with last-minute challenges.”

Saanie Daara highlighted how recurring player absences disrupted the team.

“In the last match alone, eight players pulled out. While injuries and personal reasons are understandable, it reflects deeper issues in how the team is managed,” he said.

He also criticised the performance of the team’s coach and management.

“Toward the end of the campaign, the way the coach handled the team raised concerns. The Management Committee and the Executive Committee of the GFA also failed to rise to the occasion,” he noted.

For Saanie Daara, the problems were not isolated but systemic.

“The entire ecosystem did not work well,” he told Evans Mensah. “From the coach to the players to the leadership, everyone has to take a share of the blame.”

Despite the dismal showing, Saanie Daara acknowledged moments of promise, such as Ghana’s previous success in securing a spot at the 2022 World Cup.

“We had an average squad age of just 20.7 years at the World Cup, which showed we have potential. But potential means little without proper execution,” he cautioned.

Looking ahead, Saanie Daara urged for a radical overhaul of the system but warned against dismantling what little progress has been made.

“Something radical must happen, but the radicality of it must not completely destroy what has been built. We need reflection, careful planning, and better leadership to avoid repeating these mistakes,” he concluded.

A renowned sports journalist, Veronica Commey, has expressed her heartbreak and disappointment following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for AFCON 2025.

Appearing on Joy News’ PM Express on November 18, she did not mince words about the state of Ghana football, describing it as a wake-up call for those in charge of the sport.

“I am heartbroken, but not because I’m a Ghanaian…first of all, I’m a football fan. What it means is that I will be disappointed if we are unable to qualify for major competitions,” she began, reflecting the collective sentiment of a nation.

This failure marks the first time since 2004 that Ghana’s national football team has missed the Africa Cup of Nations, a stark departure from the team’s glory days.

Ms Commey highlighted how the Black Stars’ performance has been on a steady decline, starting with their exit in the Round of 16 in 2019, followed by group-stage exits in subsequent tournaments.

“We have been emphasising this since 2008. We made six semifinals, with two of them being finals. We would have expected to get better, but after 2019, it has been alarm bells all the way,” she stated.

Ms Commey believes the warning signs were evident long before the Black Stars’ recent failure.

She recounted the team’s inconsistent performances during the World Cup qualifiers and AFCON campaign, describing them as symptoms of deeper issues within Ghana football.

“When we started the qualifiers, it all looked good because we beat Mali and came home to win. But when we took off on the AFCON campaign, it was all telling,” she explained, referencing losses to Angola and Niger, as well as a draw with Sudan.

To her, these performances pointed to systemic problems that were ignored for too long.

“The alarm bells were sounding every day about the fact that there is something wrong,” she lamented.

Despite her heartbreak, Ms Commey viewed this failure as an opportunity for reflection and reform.

“If this is the lowest ever we need to get to so that those who are at the helm of our affairs, or those who care about football, would want to have a sit-down and look inward, then so be it,” she declared.

She called on stakeholders, from administrators to fans, to critically assess the current state of football in the country.

“If we don’t have a genuine look at what we can do, then days like this will keep happening,” she warned.

Ms Commey stated the far-reaching impact of football success on the nation’s morale.

“In reality, when the Black Stars or the national team starts doing well, it positively affects all of us,” she said.

The disappointment is not just about the game but also about the pride and unity the team brings to the country.

Her plea was clear: Ghana football needs an overhaul.

“Something is wrong, and until we admit it and take steps to fix it, this decline will continue,” she concluded.

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has expressed his disappointment following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Mr Okraku took to Facebook to reflect on the team’s journey from their recent highs to this monumental disaster, describing the situation as painful.

“From the highest heights of world football on the 29th of March 2022 to the lowest ebb of AFCON qualifying matches. My heart bleeds,” Okraku began, referring to Ghana’s qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup as a moment of pride, now overshadowed by their inability to secure a spot in AFCON 2025.

He acknowledged the disappointment shared by fans and stakeholders, admitting that the current state of affairs does not align with their expectations.

“Definitely, this is not what we want or what we bargained for,” he wrote. “At this point, only cool heads can win, and we as leaders of our sport will stay together, be honest with ourselves, and fix this problem.”

He also described the journey to recovery as “bumpy and rough,” but remained optimistic about the nation’s potential for resurgence.

“The road to full recovery after normalisation is definitely bumpy and rough, but our collective efforts and patience will win, and Ghana, our beloved country, will win,” he said.

“As a Black Stars fan and as the leader, I share in your pain and in our pain,” he wrote, reiterating his commitment to guiding the team through this difficult period.

Despite the setback, Okraku ended his post on a hopeful note, assuring fans that the team will bounce back stronger.

“We will rise from this temporary setback. It shall be well,” he concluded.

The Black Stars’ failure to qualify for AFCON 2025 marks a historic low for Ghanaian football, prompting widespread criticism of the team’s performance and the leadership of the GFA. Okraku’s call for unity and honest reflection could set the tone for a new chapter in Ghana football’s recovery efforts.

I won’t resign as Black Stars coach – Otto Addo https://www.myjoyonline.com/i-wont-resign-as-black-stars-coach-otto-addo/ https://www.myjoyonline.com/i-wont-resign-as-black-stars-coach-otto-addo/#respond Mon, 18 Nov 2024 18:47:56 +0000 https://www.myjoyonline.com/?p=10032640468 Under-fire Ghana coach Otto Addo has firmly stated he will not step down following the Black Stars' failure to qualify for AFCON 2025, marking the first time since 2004 that the team has missed the tournament.]]>

Under-fire Ghana coach Otto Addo has firmly stated he will not step down following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for AFCON 2025, marking the first time since 2004 that the team has missed the tournament.

Speaking after Ghana’s 2-1 defeat to Niger in their final Group F match, Addo reflected on the challenges his side faced and defended his commitment to the team despite mounting criticism.

“I’m not the person who can resign. If I had done this, I’d never have become a player or even a coach,” he declared.

“If you know where I have come from as a person to arrive at this job you won’t even ask about resignation.

“People shouting and telling me to resign can’t affect me.”

Addo acknowledged the team’s struggles with defending set pieces, a recurring issue that cost them dearly against Niger.

“We started okay but conceded a goal from a set piece. We were aware because the last time we met, they scored from a corner. Surely, we have to defend these set pieces better,” he said. “It seems everything is going against us.”

Despite the defeat, Addo noted some positives, particularly the performances of debutants who, in his view, justified their inclusion.

“There are some positives, especially from players who hadn’t played before but did well today,” he added.

He urged the media and fans to shift focus away from blame and instead support the players, who he said had given their all.

“The media has the power to control the narratives of games, not only the results. You have the power to lift somebody up,” he stated. “I really need you to leave the players alone because they gave us everything.”

In a surprising turn, Addo also used the platform to call for peaceful elections in Ghana, expressing hope for unity amidst the country’s political processes.

“I would like to pray for peaceful elections. We have a peaceful country, so no matter the outcome, we pray for peace,” he said.

While Addo admitted that a draw against Niger would not have changed Ghana’s elimination, he acknowledged the impact it could have had on morale.

“Surely everyone is disappointed, and even if we had played a draw, it wouldn’t have changed anything. Yes, it would have improved the mood of the country and the energy levels of the players,” he admitted.

The defeat capped off a disastrous campaign for Ghana, who finished bottom of their group without a single win, leaving fans and stakeholders questioning the direction of the national team under Addo’s leadership.

Niger’s head coach, Badou Zaki, attributed his team’s stunning 2-1 victory over Ghana in the final match of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers to exploiting the Black Stars’ defensive frailties.

Speaking after the match, Zaki revealed that his side approached the game with confidence, especially after analysing Ghana’s performances in recent tournaments.

“From the last AFCON, we knew that the Ghanaian team can score, but they concede goals,” he remarked. “And our last match against Sudan gave us the confidence that we could do it.”

Niger’s triumph, which has left Ghana at the bottom is a bit surprising considering the mammoth of challenges he said his team encountered.

“Most of my players are amateurs in Niger. For those outside, they travelled eighteen hours before games and often arrived a day before the match,” he explained.

He also pointed out how travel constraints affected their preparations, particularly when playing away matches.

“Our flights often took an hour, even from Lomé to Accra. If we had a plane that could make these trips in a shorter time, it would have helped a great deal,” Zaki added.

Despite these setbacks, Niger’s victory deepened Ghana’s woes as the Black Stars finished last in Group F.

The result means Ghana failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time since 2004, marking a historic low point for the Black Stars.

AFCON 2025Q: Ghana lose 2-1 to Niger at home to end disastrous campaign https://www.myjoyonline.com/afcon-2025q-ghana-lose-2-1-to-niger-at-home-to-end-disastrous-campaign/ https://www.myjoyonline.com/afcon-2025q-ghana-lose-2-1-to-niger-at-home-to-end-disastrous-campaign/#respond Mon, 18 Nov 2024 18:21:20 +0000 https://www.myjoyonline.com/?p=10032640445 Black Stars head coach Otto Addo handed debut call-ups to Terry Yegbe, Nathaniel Adjei, and Isaac Afful, while Nations FC defender Razak Simpson retained his spot in the squad after an impressive display against Angola.]]>

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo handed debut call-ups to Terry Yegbe, Nathaniel Adjei, and Isaac Afful, while Nations FC defender Razak Simpson retained his spot in the squad after an impressive display against Angola.

However, Otto’s changes reflected in the team’s performance, as they struggled to find cohesion on the pitch. It came as no surprise when Niger took the lead after a series of close shaves.

The opener arrived in the 29th minute, with Sumaila Badamasi towering above Ghana’s defence to head home Alhassane Bonkano’s corner. Just three minutes later, Bonkano dribbled past Isaac Afful to set up Anthony Sosah, but the latter’s effort sailed wide of the goalposts.

Ghana’s first real chance came in the 29th minute when Ernest Nuamah broke free from midfield, but his cross narrowly missed Mohammed Kudus, who arrived a fraction of a second too late.

Two minutes later, Terry Yegbe found the back of the net from Kingsley Schindler’s cross, but the goal was ruled out for a foul on Nigerien goalkeeper Kassali Djibo.

Five minutes before the interval, Otto Addo made his first substitution, introducing Osman Bukari for Nathaniel Adjei. On the stroke of half-time, Ghana came close again when Schindler’s cross found Ibrahim Sulemana, but his header from close range flew over the bar.

Otto Addo made two more changes at half-time, replacing Isaac Afful and Kingsley Schindler with Ebenezer Annan and Kamaradini Mamudu. The fresh legs added some urgency to Ghana’s play, and the Black Stars nearly equalised when Annan’s cut-back was miscleared, but Osman Bukari’s effort went wide.

As the game progressed, Francis Abu and Ibrahim Sulemana began to assert control in midfield, and Ghana’s dominance almost paid off when Ernest Nuamah’s cut-back was cleared just before Kudus could make contact.

In a bid to break the deadlock, Otto Addo brought on Jerry Afriyie for Ransford Yeboah Königsdörffer just before the hour mark. The substitution bore fruit in the 67th minute when Jerry Afriyie stabbed home Nuamah’s cross to equalise.

Amid the celebrations, Otto Addo entered the pitch to embrace Afriyie. Two minutes later, Razak Simpson’s glancing header narrowly missed the crossbar.

Ghana continued to push for a winner, with Kudus coming close in the 83rd minute when his free-kick from 28 yards clipped the post.

In stoppage time, Niger restored their lead as Daniel Sosah rose above the Ghanaian defence to head in the decisive goal. Sosah, an Accra-New Town-born striker, was the toast of Nigerien fans who had turned up to support him and three other Ghanaian-born players in the Nigerien squad.

Moments after the restart, Mohammed Kudus was brought down in the box, earning Ghana a penalty. However, the resultant spot-kick was missed, sparking wild celebrations from the Nigerien supporters and despair among the home fans.

Monday’s result means Ghana finish bottom of Group F with just three points. Niger end the campaign with seven points, while Sudan (eight points) and Angola (14 points) qualify for AFCON 2025.

This marks the first time Ghana have failed to qualify for the tournament since 2004. It is also the first time in the nation’s history that the Black Stars have completed an AFCON qualifying series without a single victory.

Head coach of Legon Cities, Samuel Paa Kwesi Fabin, has made a striking admission, stating that the club lacks a dedicated fanbase.

The Royals often play their home games in an empty University of Ghana Stadium.

When asked by journalists to send a message to the team’s supporters, he said, “Sometimes when you ask me to address our fans, I honestly don’t know who to speak to because, truthfully, Legon Cities don’t have fans.”

The experienced coach made these remarks after his side staged an impressive comeback to secure a 2-1 victory against Ghana Premier League debutants, Berekum Holy Stars, in Week 11.

Fabin’s comments underscore a unique challenge facing Legon Cities as they aim to climb out of the relegation zone and establish themselves as a competitive force in the Ghana Premier League.

Despite the win, Legon Cities’ campaign this season has been far from ideal. The Royals, who had a commendable performance last season, are now battling relegation.

With just three wins in the ongoing season, they find themselves in the bottom three of the league table.

‘GFA doing trial-and-error with Black Stars coaching job’ – George Afriyie https://www.myjoyonline.com/gfa-doing-trial-and-error-with-black-stars-coaching-job-george-afriyie/ https://www.myjoyonline.com/gfa-doing-trial-and-error-with-black-stars-coaching-job-george-afriyie/#respond Mon, 18 Nov 2024 13:25:00 +0000 https://www.myjoyonline.com/?p=10032640077 Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie has criticised the governing body for what he describes as a pattern of trial-and-error appointments in managing the Black Stars' coaching role.]]>

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie has criticised the governing body for what he describes as a pattern of trial-and-error appointments in managing the Black Stars’ coaching role.

Mr Afriyie, who chair highlighted the frequent changes and lack of a clear strategy in hiring head coaches over the past five years.

“Coach C.K. [Akonnor] was sacked, then Milovan Rajevac was brought in. Milo was sacked, and Otto Addo came. Otto himself said he wasn’t ready for the job on a long-term basis. He left, and Chris Hughton was hired. Chris has been sacked, and now Otto Addo is back again. If you’re doing this within five years, isn’t it just trial and error?” Afriyie questioned on GTV.

Afriyie expressed concern about the GFA’s decision to repeatedly entrust the national team to inexperienced coaches, arguing that such choices have undermined the Black Stars’ progress.

“Otto Addo, until taking over this job, had never been the head coach of any serious team. Look at his assistants—none of them had significant experience either. Elsewhere, when you appoint an inexperienced head coach, they bring in seasoned deputies to support them. But in this case, even the assistants were inexperienced,” he remarked.

The former Black Stars Management Committee chairman referenced the coaching team that led Ghana to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which included Mas-Ud Didi Dramani, George Boateng, and Chris Hughton as assistants. According to Afriyie, this arrangement reflected a lack of foresight in assembling a competent technical team capable of steering the national side to success.

Afriyie’s comments come amid growing discontent among fans and stakeholders following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

His remarks underscore the need for a more structured and deliberate approach to managing the Black Stars, with an emphasis on long-term planning and building a strong technical foundation.

“The coaching job for the Black Stars is not one for experiments. We need a clear strategy, experienced hands, and proper planning if we want to restore the team’s glory,” Afriyie concluded.

With Ghanaian football at a crossroads, these insights could serve as a wake-up call for the GFA to rethink its approach to managing the national team. Fans and stakeholders alike are now demanding accountability and a shift towards more sustainable practices in football administration.
