The Director of Sports and Wellness at the University of Ghana, Dr Austin Luguterah, has emphasised that sports facilities are best managed by institutions, asserting that his office is well-positioned to oversee the University of Ghana Stadium.
Since taking over from Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu, Dr Luguterah has advocated for a structured system in which dedicated institutions handle facility maintenance, professional management, and athletic development.

In an interview with Muftawu Nabila Abdulai on JoyNews’ Prime Take, Dr Luguterah cited research supporting the notion that institutions are more effective at maintaining sports facilities.
“Research has shown that sports facilities are better managed by institutions. For instance, our swimming pool has been consistently maintained over the years.
"We have policies in place, and even during strikes, staff are still here to ensure upkeep,” he explained.
Dr Luguterah also discussed specific facilities, such as the Mondo tracks at UG Stadium, which require specialised maintenance.
“The Mondo tracks have a unique upkeep routine. They’re like carpets—needing periodic washing, cleaning, and watering.
"We’ve installed multiple water outlets around the stadium to make this process efficient, often working in the evenings to ensure optimal care,” he added.
With established policies and a focus on specialised maintenance, Dr Luguterah believes that institutional management is essential to fostering a lasting and vibrant sports culture.
