A team of military officers deployed to keep peace in Yendi allegedly brutalized a 35-year-old carpenter, Amavi Abom, rendering him unconscious and inflicting several wounds on him.
According to family members of the victim who is currently on admission at the intensive care unit of the Yendi Government Hospital, he was whisked from his house by the security personnel during the early hours of Saturday, May 30 upon a complaint from one suspect who is currently in police grips.
They disclosed that the suspect was reported to have engaged the services of Mr. Amavi to construct a double-bed for him at Nayili Fong where his shop was located and he readily obliged after both agreed on the amount to be paid for the bed.
Days later, the suspect came back to complain that the bed was not the exact specification he had demanded and therefore said he would not accept it.
The carpenter was compelled to construct a new one to suit his taste but again, the suspect refused to accept it, and reported the matter to his friends at the military barracks at Yendi.
Amavi, on hearing that his client had reported the matter to the soldiers, also rushed to lodge a complaint at the police station and was given a police protection at his home.
Sources say the assigned policeman was expected to inform the military on arrival that the matter was being handled by the police and therefore they should stay off.
They were reported to have defied the instructions of the police chief who issued the instructions, dragged the victim into a waiting military pickup and headed for the barracks where he was allegedly subjected to series of brutalities.
He was later dumped near the premises of the police station and was rushed to the hospital by the police who found him lying unconscious.
Health authorities at the Yendi hospital revealed to the DAILY GUIDE that Mr. Amavi was coughing blood and could hardly utter a word on arrival at the facility.
He is currently responding to treatment while the suspect whose identity has been withheld for security reasons is in police custody assisting in investigations.
When contacted, the Yendi District Police Commander, Mr. Agutu Adalon, confirmed the incident but said the suspect is currently on bail. He added that this was to enable his outfit monitor the health status of the victim, and hinted that an action would immediately be taken once the victim could give his caution statement.
Meanwhile, military personnel at the barracks were tight-lipped over the matter when this paper tried finding out who could have been responsible for such acts.
