Solar-powered traffic lights advocated

The Majority Leader and acting Minister of Transportation, Felix Owusu Agyapong, has advocated the exploration of solar-propelled traffic lights to check uncontrolled traffic situations. He said, "At a time when there are many vehicles as well as frequent power outages there is the need to look at other alternatives to ensure safety on our roads." Mr. Agyapong said this when he inspected some road projects in Accra on Friday. The tour which lasted for about two hours took him to the recently completed Kwame Nkrumah Circle over-head foot bridge, Circle-Achimota dual carriage road, Achimota bus terminal and the ongoing 5.7 km Achimota-Ofankor three-lane dual carriage road. Mr. Agyapong challenged the city engineers to come out with the best possible way to implement the solar system of traffic control. "The idea is that we don’t create undue traffic on our roads anytime the light goes off," he added. Mr. Bonne Acquah, the resident engineer of the Achimota-Ofankor road project, said work on the project is progressing without any hinderance. He said, "As of now we are clearing vegetation, garbage and excavating unsuitable materials in swamps and filling them with boulders." Mr. Acquah explained that, the interchange at Hotel de Joko was moved to Ofankor due to its closeness to the Achimota interchange. Source: The Ghanaian Times
