We wish to establish our dissatisfaction at the conduct of the former Attorney General, Mr Martin Amidu, and as such congratulate the president for the bold decision taken to dismiss him from the government.
We hereby express our solidarity with the president for the unprecedented decision which sends a relevant signal to all his ministers. This decision we want to believe, was taken in the interest of good governance, and furthermore, as a demonstration of commitments to the values and principles in our politics. In our view, the pronouncements of the former attorney general to the effect that he was privy to some members of Prof Mills’ government who were corrupt was unfortunate and undeserving of a member of the NDC government. To the extent that he was not able to substantiate his allegation gives reason to justify his dismissal.
In our candid opinion, the dismissal of Mr. Martin Amidu has been long overdue, in so far as we want to demonstrate to the world that the NDC does not countenance tattlers whose prime motive is to dent the good image of this government and create disaffection among the electorates.
However, in as much as the former minister, in our opinion had been sacked a time too late, we do acknowledge the unique leadership style of the president in the manner in which he kept his composure in handling both the Martin Amidu case and its antecedents. The latitude given to him in order for him to vindicate himself by mentioning names of those he perceived to be corrupt in this government, demonstrates the president’s resolve to expose corruption without discrimination on the basis of party affiliation.
If Mr Amidu was able, within the period to substantiate his claim, the president would not hesitate in taken such persons through the due process of law. However failure to mention names, even though an opportunity to do so was offered indicates that his action was instigated by an ulterior motive, other than the quest to fight corruption as he sought to project. Going by this observation, we reaffirm our endorsement of the dismissal and wish to give thumbs up to the president.
In a germane matter to this, we wish to indicate our appreciation for the position taken by the president in the Woyome saga. The directive, which seeks to compel some members of the erstwhile NPP administration to appear before the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) must be enforced, because it was meant to help unravel the mystery surrounding the loss of 52 million Ghana Cedis, and further take appropriate steps to retrieve said amount for the state. On this note, we wish to express our full support for the president’s action in so far as it is taken to protect the treasury of the state and expose acts of indiscretion tainted with corrupt intention.
It is also very significant to note that, the offerings of our justice system are not the preserve of any political party, neither is it a gagging tool for a section of the society. In this vein, we wish to call on the president, as a matter of fairness and equity, to compel the members of the defunct NPP government to appear before the EOCO as soon as possible, so that the hypocrisy of their propagandists will be exposed.
Again just as the sledge had fallen on Amidu, it should fall on any member of the society, irrespective of his or her political affiliation, so that we avoid the perception of negative discrimination against our own members. Thank you
Long live Ghana! Long live the NDC!!
SHAIBU M. SHAMSU
PRESIDENT, SGD
