The Social Welfare Department is seeking custody of an eight-year-old boy sold into captivity by her mother.
The boy was sold by her mother for GH¢30 (¢300,000) to a fisherman at Yeji in the Northern Region, where he was forced to dive into the Volta Lake to remove fishing nets, starved and often beaten.
The boy is currently on admission at the Winneba Government Hospital recovering from a severe respiratory infection, asthma and Kwashiorkor.
The Social Welfare Department is to send a team to the hospital in an attempt to take custody of the child.
Mr. Stephen Adongo, who is in charge of child protection at the Department, told Joy News that their interest is to rehabilitate the boy and ensure that he is restored to normal life.
He however believes that the boy’s mother, the fisherman who bought him and all others who may have played a part in his predicament, should be made to face the law.
The International Organization for Migration is also to send a team to visit the boy to find out how they can assist.
