A social movement, Youth Against Betting (YAB) have cautioned students of Base Ordnance Depot Basic School to abstain from betting.
Speaking to the youngsters on Thursday, the YAB’s Public Affairs Director, Prince David Orchill highlighted the adverse consequences of the canker.
According to him, the practice can be addictive which in turn leads it’s victims to engage in social vices such as stealing.
“Betting is in the same category of addiction like smoking, so when you're betting you become like someone who is smoking and you'll become addicted to it. And if you don't break the cycle, you might use your school fees to bet," he stated.
While indicating that no good can come from the practice of betting, Mr Orchill urged the students to focus on their studies.
"There is no profit from betting. You might make some small wins and think that is enough but that is only to draw you in until you become an addict.
"That is why it is better you don't have to start at all," he stressed.
The Deputy Coordinator of YAB, Isaac Piyuori was optimistic that betting addicts still have hope.
He urged students to open up to their teachers when they are battling with any form of addiction, particularly, betting.
In an interview, the School’s Boys Prefect, Isaac Elorm Sowatey was thankful for the movement’s visitation.
He reiterated the power of abstinence, however, he encouraged his fellow students who engage in the act to stop as soon as possible.
