Less than 24 hours after the Member of Parliament for the Awutu Senya East Constituency, Hawa Koomson admitted to firing a gun at a voters’ registration centre in Kasoa, social media users have taken to various platforms to condemn the act.
Contrary to eyewitnesses’ accounts that the men in her company were responsible for the act, the MP said she was the only one holding a gun.
Hawa Koomson in an interview on Adom TV and JoyNews TV said her decision to fire the gun was in self defense against attacks from some masked thugs affiliated to the opposition NDC.
The development has initiated various debates on social media, with many accusing her of covering up for some members of her entourage and others joining calls for her resignation.
Trending on Twitter, the MP who is also the Minister for Special Development Initiatives is being accused of abusing her position in society and endangering the lives of residents within the locality where the incident occurred.

The few women we have given power in this country will be abusing it like that.
You see when I say a woman who has power is very arrogant and listens to nobody people get mad at me. Is this the equal rights/opportunity women are fighting for ??
We move regardless pic.twitter.com/WV66kcylMV
So what happened to going through the process to challenge people? Mavis Hawa Koomson should be ashamed of her justification(s).😢 #CitiCBS

NPP and violence .... Gun-wielding, warning shots-firing minister of state. There can be no reasonable justification for minister of state Hawa Koomson, who is paid from the public purse, intimidating the very people whose taxes keep her employed.
— James Agyenim-Boateng (@jagyenim) July 20, 2020
Why would Hawa Koomson carry a gun to a public place?
To serve what purpose?
What kind of irresponsibility is that ?— Abena Yalley (@ABYalley) July 21, 2020

Is warning shot a protective measure?
Mr. President, please why is Hawa Koomson still a minister? If she won’t resign, please sack her. @NAkufoAddo
— Etwienana Yaw Amaniampong Nkwantabisa Asante II (@theakyemmafia) July 21, 2020
The disheartening part is that Hawa Koomson doesn’t see anything wrong with her actions. That’s unbelievable. #CitiCBS

Hawa Koomson trying to court sympathy by playing the "Is it because I'm a woman?" card?

No Madam. It's because you are irresponsible. This is not even about gender.
Shame on you!
Gun-slinging minister of state?
— I, Nii Moi Thompson (@Attaanii) July 20, 2020
It's clear she endangered public safety and could have killed someone.
Let's see how both the president and the police handle this one. https://t.co/iMoDCDqSlC

Hawa koomson quit tripping ......how can you do this .....really????
— Dj O’Brien (@1RealDjObrien) July 21, 2020
We should limit political power in this country ....what is this......smh
But Hawa Koomson was very arrogant to fire at least 3 warning shots which nothing shows it’s a warning shot bcos it ended up landing on someone’s property (gate) per reports. She must be arrested too. 2/2#JoySMS #CitiCBS
— Ing. Save Ashes🔥 (@IngAshes) July 21, 2020
Hawa Koomson is not too special. If Stonebwoy was arrested and arraigned before court for removing a gun in public even though he didn’t fire any shots. 1/2#JoySMS #CitiCBS
— Ing. Save Ashes🔥 (@IngAshes) July 21, 2020
Ghana Police Service is a joke 😂💔.. You've arrested four people who gave warning shots at Kasoa buh you're going to invite Hawa Koomson who publicly have admitted that she fired warning shots. Really? Is Madam Hawa Koomson more human than the four arrested #KickNanaOut
— H A Z A R D 🧡🖤 (@mrhazardson) July 21, 2020
Hawa Koomson must resign or @NAkufoAddo Please do the needful because this is shamful.
— Nsawam_Choffey (@AHakimIsmaila) July 21, 2020
Stonebwoy didn't even pulled the trigger o,he was charged for just displaying a gun in public. Can a Court in Ghana today under Akufo Addo charge Hawa Koomson for shooting in a public place? If you're an NPP member, you're above the laws of Ghana. Let's Vote for change.@NAkufoAddo pic.twitter.com/dgB8WVorxt
— Abdul Karim (@Karimbos45) July 21, 2020
Some people still believe it was Hawa Koomson who actually fired the shots at Kasoa, but it was not her. She is sacrificing herself to protect the NPP because the invincible forces still exist, even after passing that so-called vigilantism law.
— Mary Banks (@MBanks133) July 21, 2020
Nana Addo will pardon her too. pic.twitter.com/FYDbLiIS1q
That was one of the guys from Hawa Koomson's car with a stone. A police officer was around and he still managed to hit the guy with the stone because Hawa Koomson have authorized them to disrupt the exercise of the EC and cause fear and panic in Awutu. #4More4Nana #KickNanaOut pic.twitter.com/GYtAnH9XzU

A sitting MP/Minister of state detects people from other areas are infiltrating the process, so she asks them to leave and fires warning shots?
Mavis Hawa Koomson, your explanation no, I don’t get it. #CitiCBS
Hawa Koomson should be sack immediately and made to face the law just like any other person .#JoySMS https://t.co/0tDgT8x5SJ
— Kwame Rudolf (@RudolfKwame) July 21, 2020
I'm happy as a Ghanaian this morning because everyone calling into JoySMS are condemning Hawa Koomson's conduct, they all calling for her resignation and arrest. We can't allow a public officer to display impunity and go free. #JoySMS

For those making this Hawa Koomson case about gender are clowns. For each and every misbehaviour that happens in the political system do we attach gender. When Carlos' incident happened we said MP not man. pic.twitter.com/rfmM9zK1ZY
— Lomokuor 💖 (@lena_xoxoxoxoxo) July 21, 2020
Hawa Koomson clearly went to the same special school of hubris Carlos Ahenkorah graduated from. You flagrantly break the rules/laws and have the courage to announce to the whole World that indeed you broke the rules. Lol. People aren’t even ashamed anymore. Baffling.
— Fui T. (@blackstarsfan) July 21, 2020
Has Hawa Koomson's sack letter been issued by the Presidency yet?
— 🎧🤞🏿2020✊🏿♓ (@DASeraphine) July 21, 2020
When all is said and done, we really have to talk about NPP MP Hawa Koomson had a shotgun that she shot - into a crowd.
— Miss Kwakyewa 👑 (@bougiefeminist) July 21, 2020
She claims it's warning shots but eyewitnesses claim they almost got shot.
So...wait oh.
This isn't even the election proper; it's a REGISTRATION process.
How many hours, days to take president to fire disgracefully and dishonourable minister Hawa Koomson? pic.twitter.com/9rfNCKUbzv

Meanwhile, police say four persons have been arrested in connection with the incident while the MP is yet to be invited.
