Movie lovers woke up to the news that arguably the most popular movie character in superhero comics has been axed.
Henry Cavill has announced that he will no longer play the Superman Character in the DC Studios franchise.
Cavill took to Instagram on Wednesday to share that he recently had a meeting with DC Studios' new co-chief James Gunn and Peter Safran where it was decided he will not reprise his role as Superman.
"I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return in October, prior to their hire, this news isn't the easiest, but that's life," he posted.
"My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It's been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards," Cavill signed off his statement.
The next project focuses on 'earlier part' of superhero's life.
This is particularly striking as Henry left his lead role on Netflix's 'The Witcher' in October only to be let go.
He also appeared mid-credit ending the Black Adam movie, stirring up ideas of a future sequel.
On the back of this revelation, the sentiment has been one of sadness for social media users who have admired the character and its handling by the actor over the years.
