A cross-section of Ghanaians have taken to social media to join ongoing arguments over the consequences of passing the Public Universities Bill (PUB) which is currently in Parliament.
This Bill which was initially suspended in October due to public outrage was brought before parliament again on Tuesday, December 15, 2020.
When passed, the governance, operations, and administration of Public Universities in the country will be harmonised.
But, it has generated criticism from stakeholders in the education sector since its introduction including the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG).
While some users say the bill will make operations of tertiary institutions smooth, others argue it will lead to the politicisation of higher learning institutions.
sadly, they're still not thinking about their future. for whatever reason, some youth are still in support of this because their party government wants to pass this Public University Bill in to law. Even UTAG themselves are against it.

The Public University Bill really bothers me. It really grinds my gears.
— Dela Dela Tamakloe (@KelDel07) December 16, 2020
We've given all we have as a country to you politicians. Just leave academia be!
It's so disappointing.
The NDC are saying, even if the Public University bill is passed, they'll annul it when they are voted into office so what's the essence of passing the bill in the first place ??? Stress!!

Qualify the existing universities with good structures and amenities aah wose Public University Bill
I'm glad the Public University Bill is back in the spotlight especially after an election where constituents were really hard on MPs.

This will definitely differentiate between MPs that put the people first and those who are more inclined to partisan politics.
The Public University Bill basically gives the government power over the universities?. Appointment of council, chancellor and Vice chancellor and all? Smh

"The Public University Bill, if allowed to pass, will take the country back to the 1960s. It will result in the loss of institutional autonomy, self-governance, collegiality, tenure and individual rights and freedoms of academics and students." - Prof. Appiagyei-Atua.

The Public University Bill will be a success if various governments do not politicize it, other than that it's unnecessary considering the disadvantages it comes with.

The Public University Bill doesn't sit well with me at all,how can the president be head of all public universities,UTAG should resist this bill even if it takes them taking it to high court. pic.twitter.com/ArgVGOcmbV

Interesting times ahead
Government wants to control Universities by handing power to the President to appoint a Chancellors.

This gov't once again want to take their 'politricks' to our tertiary institutions.
The Public University Bill when passed will do us more harm than good
The Public University Bill seeks to establish Executive micro-management of Public Universities, it gives too much power to the Minister. The Bill seeks to politicize Public Universities, President @NAkufoAddo is a listening Leader, I trust the right thing will be done!!! pic.twitter.com/YbuV0gVbdd

They don’t have much influence now as compared to what the Public University Bill will give them https://t.co/bWI6708VMp
— Kelewele Joint 🍟 (@Ankamagyimi) December 16, 2020
Once the Public University Bill has passed second reading in parliament, agbenaa! They’ve detected quickly that, it would be difficult to get consensus from the 8th parliament so they’re pushing all the controversial bills/motions through the 7th parliament. Agyapa is crawling!
