The Republic of Slovenia has commended the Kingdom of Morocco for its distinguished role as a strategic partner of the European Union (EU).
This was highlighted in a joint communiqué following discussions between Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Slovenia's Minister of Foreign and European Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister, Tanja Fajon.
Both countries emphasized the historic and privileged partnership between Morocco and the EU, recognizing its significance for both regions.
They committed to enhancing cooperation, dialogue, and partnership in the Euro-African region, particularly in security, stability, migration, and socio-economic development.
Slovenia and Morocco also discussed regional issues, exchanging views on common interests and the challenges to peace and security in the Sahel region.
Slovenia acknowledged Morocco's key role in promoting regional security and its efforts in combating terrorism and managing cross-border migration.
Moreover, the two nations explored opportunities for closer cooperation in internal security and law enforcement, focusing on organised crime, cybercrime, money laundering, and terrorism.
In light of Slovenia's recent membership in the UN Security Council for 2024-2025, Bourita congratulated Fajon and appreciated Slovenia's inclusive approach within the council.
Both countries agreed to continue consultations and coordination within international organizations on multilateral issues of common interest.
The communiqué also highlighted the importance of academic cooperation within the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), encouraging partnerships between the Euro-Mediterranean University in Piran and the Euromed University of Fez.
On the Moroccan Autonomy Plan, Slovenia praised it as a viable basis for resolving the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, supporting the UN-led process and Morocco's efforts for a realistic, pragmatic, and lasting political solution.
Additionally, the ministers stressed the importance of strengthening political dialogue and bilateral cooperation, particularly in energy, environment, logistics, agriculture, and green technologies.
They also underscored the significance of inter-parliamentary contacts and cultural cooperation for promoting human and economic development.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of their mutual commitment to address migration challenges, emphasising the need for comprehensive and safe migration management and cooperation in fighting illegal migration and human trafficking.
Slovenia welcomed the initiative by King Mohammed VI to enhance Atlantic Ocean access for Sahel countries and the Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline project.
It also praised Morocco's reforms under King Mohammed VI's leadership, aimed at creating a more dynamic and open society and economy.
Slovenia's official visit to Morocco marks the 32nd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations, underscoring their continued commitment to deepening their strategic partnership.
