The government will be announcing new measures for the ongoing SIM card re-registration exercise to citizens who have genuine concerns for not acquiring the Ghana Card.
According to Communications and Digitalisation Minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, consultations are ongoing to make room for some category of citizens to get their cards registered.
In a statement signed by the Minister November 11, 2022, it explained that “despite ample opportunity afforded all to complete the registration of their SIM cards, some who have the Ghana cards and have begun the process have failed to complete the registration.”
That is their choice and we cannot begrudge them”, the statement mentioned.
Ursula Owusu-Ekuful recently told Joy Business’s Ebenezer Sabutey that discussions are ongoing with the National Identification Authority to find new measures moving forward.
“Watch out this space, you will be hearing from the Ministry soon because we must do this to protect our eco-system irrespective of what it will take. There are some with genuine concerns over the Ghana Card so we are having a discussion with the National Identification Authority to come out with a new measure for them”.
“For those who have the card and decides not to register for no reason, definitely we shall institute plan and they will hear from us soon”, she said.
All SIM cards which have completed the first stage of the registration exercise but not done with the second phase will be blocked from accessing data services on 20th November 2022 and completely deactivated on 30th November 2022.
According to the data from the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation, surrently, 30,011,082 have completed the first stage (linking of Ghana Card to SIM number).
As of November 9, 2022, 20,892,970 subscribers, had completed the SIM card registration (linkage and biometric).
Almost 70% of these registrations have been completed.
