The Director of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said the legal team of the party will not defend the perpetrators of mayhem that marred the party’s National Youth and Women's Organizer elections.
The election was held on Saturday to elect new officers for the two positions.
Mr. Abraham Amaliba explained that although individual lawyers within the party may be approached by these culprits to represent them, the party itself will not task any of its legal team members to defend those who are in “conflict with the law.”
“If anybody needs the services of a lawyer, you’re not to turn that person down. So the politics of this is different from the legal aspect. You don’t marry the two. So if anybody who is in conflict with the law needs representation, you don’t say that nobody should represent that person. That will be going against the Constitution,” he said JoyNews’ AM Show, Monday.
Mr. Amaliba said the NDC will not “shield” anyone who was involved in inciting violence during the election.
He reiterated that it would not be a problem should any NDC legal team member be seen representing said culprits, stating that “they’re manifesting their legal profession which the Constitution enjoins them to provide legal assistance.”
He emphasised that lawyers affiliated to the NDC cannot be forced not to represent anyone.
On Saturday, the party elected officials for the National Youth and Women's Organizer positions.
Mr. George Opare Addo was elected as National Youth Oganiser. He fought off competition from Brogya Gyenfi. Dr. Hannah Louisa Bissiw won the National Women's Organizer post. He closest contender was Margaret Ansei.
In the course of proceedings, there was a shooting incident and four persons got injured.
Meanwhile, Ghana Police has placed GH₵10,000.00 bounty each on 16 suspects for causing mayhem at the congress.
The election was characterized by throwing of objects such as stones, tables and chairs. According to a Police report, this action was carried out by two rival groups.
The 16 identified individuals are said to have been captured by Police video footages after thorough investigations.
They are asking the public to assist in the arresting of these culprits.
