Residents of Atronsu, a farming community in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region, have called on authorities to halt illegal mining (galamsey) in the area immediately or face the destruction of the excavators used in these activities.
Atronsu, like many communities across Ghana, is grappling with the effects of galamsey, which has devastated the local environment.
Residents have expressed their frustrations over the severe damage caused to their water bodies, farmlands, and crops.
During a protest against the illegal mining, the residents urged the authorities to take swift action to stop the operations.
Nana Adwoa Bien II, the Queen Mother of Atronsu and Akwamuhemaa of the Sehwi Bekwai Traditional Area, received the petition from the demonstrators.
She assured them that she would forward it to the appropriate authorities to ensure the removal of the galamsey operators from the community.
