The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ejura has revealed that his outfit contacted the Police Command for reinforcement to be deployed into the municipality after the youth hit the street to protest the death of social activist, Ibrahim Kaaka Mohammed, Monday.
According to Mohammed Bamba on JoyNews, Tuesday, the reinforcement was to ensure the peaceful burial of Ibrahim Kaaka Mohammed without any contention from the peeved youths.
“Yesterday, our brother Kaaka passed on so we know that today if he is going to be buried, there is the likelihood that the youth will rise up. So we called for police reinforcement yesterday so they came and actually slept in Ejura.
“This morning, they were assisting with the security situation in Ejura. I've been in touch with the Police Commander on this issue. We were discussing on phone because of the security situation. The security officers need to be on the ground 24/7 to monitor the developments so that the chaotic situation we are witnessing now, will be avoided.
“As I stated earlier, because of the situation that is on the ground with regards to the burial of Kaaka, that was where all our attention was, how to get him peacefully buried and how to make sure there wouldn't be any problems after burial,” he told Bernice Abu-Baidoo Lansar.
However, another reinforcement in the form of military personnel on Tuesday in Ejura Sekyedumase met the angry protestors who stormed the police station in the morning to inquire about the extent of investigations regarding the murder of the activist.
Four soldiers were seen moving in a horizontal line with a Police water cannon charging at the protestors.
The clash has resulted in the death of two residents with four others who sustained severe injuries being treated at the hospital.
Briefing JoyNews on the rationale for the presence of the military, Mr Mohammed Bamba disclosed that the intervention of the soldiers is unknown to him since he contacted the Police Command for support.
“As to whether the divisional or the regional Commander asked the military to come or not, I wouldn't be able to say it now. But what we needed at that material moment was security presence to support the operation on the ground.
“But yesterday we had discussions that the regional Command should be informed for them to help us with reinforcement. I cannot say now whether the reinforcement that the divisional Commander called for that is what brought the military or not,” he stated.
According to the MCE, information before him shows that the protesters attacked the police and military team by pelting stones at them. They subsequently, surrounded the security team but to ensure their safety, the officers fired warning shots.
“What I was told is that the youth were demonstrating. They were moving from one area to another at a point, they were throwing stones at the police vehicle and the military. So when they got to some area, the youth rounded up the security men in the middle. So the security men decided to fire a warning shot. That is what I have been told so far.
“Currently, everybody is looking at how best the health workers can take care of those severely injured and the family of those ones who are also dead are somehow very angry. So we are looking at how to calm that situation first, after that we look at what happened and the other security issues we need to brief people on,” he added.
